Credits

I have a quick question about credits and the way they transfer. Let us say you have units that state that they transfer to the UC's. However, these credits are not in your general education requirements, or your per-requisites. Where do these units go? Do they help you whatsoever?

Well they’re still going to get factored into your GPA, so if you did well in them they’ll raise your GPA. They also will count toward the 60 semester (90 quarter) units requirement to be eligible as a junior transfer. Even if you achieve 60 semester units without them they’ll add to your progression until you reach the 70 unit max (maximum amount of units you can receive credit for at a UC). So if you have 68 semester units and 8 were not for IGETC/pre-reqs, it gives you a slight head start when you transfer compared to someone with exactly 60. You’re 8 more units closer to graduation than them when you start at the UC. More units also usually means higher priority for registration in both CC and at a UC, so you’d likely get to sign up for classes a few hours earlier than that person with 60 semester units even after you transfer. Lastly, if they’re in a subject related to your major it may just further emphasize your interest in your field, which isn’t going to hold a lot of weight in your application, but certainly can’t hurt.

TL;DL: A lot of minor consolations for taking extra units not in for IGETC(GE)/pre-reqs.

As dilapidatedmind, they do count towards unit and GPA.

For instance, I took Accounting 1A & 1B. Both transfer, but are not part of my major nor do they fulfill any of the GE. However, they do factor into my transferable GPA.

So if you did good in them, your GPA goes up!
