Hey guys, I just have a quick question for you all if it's not too much trouble.

Is there a high incidence of crime at Berkeley (for example theft of personal belongings from dorm rooms)? It seems to be a respectable place, but I guess people will go pretty far for money and competition. If so, do any of you current students or alumni have any tips on keeping your stuff safe (especially laptops)? I appreciate the help, and look forward to any input!

I've never heard of any crimes happening in the dorms. People here are respectable. Some people leave laptops and class materials in the lounge for periods of time, but no one takes anything. however, that doesnt mean you shouldnt be cautious about your belongings.

I've heard of several laptops being stolen in Unit 3. The best way to avoid thefts is to have someone watch your stuff while you're gone for short periods of time and vice versa.

laptops at norton, unit 3 were stolen beginning of the year because the victim left their dorm room doors open while on leave. Hence, close your door if you arent in the room.

The strangest crime I've witnessed at Unit 3 was the 'water bottle filled with feces/urine' thrown at people walking in/out of Ida Sproul. There were sporadic incidents of this a few times during first semester, then a couple in the second semester.

The crimes stopped when UC police started investigating 2 months ago and threatened to expel the person(s) responsible and arrest them for "assault with deadly weapon" misdemeanor charges.

the dumbest crime at norton was someone throwing a chair off the balcony at one of the janitorial staff members, resulting in indefinite period of the balcony off-limits (person was greatly injured). Fortunately, balconies (at least I know the third floor) is open... other stuff that happened was someone took a crap in our elevator, shutting it down for clean up. Those living on the upper floors were not happy walking up and down 8 flights of stairs.
Welcome to college? haha

There's late night crimes in the area around the units. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Best not to be alone late at night and not be so under the influence you can't react. The security monitors from unit 1 were hit a week or so ago, so the rec. is use the shuttles and call first for assistance (ha, even for security!) to avoid these issues.

As for personal stuff theft, not really. There's always the opportunist, you know, but if you can't trust your roommate, you might as well just leave your door open. I was thinking when I moved into a dorm last fall to get one of those lap top security things, but you can't drill into anything and, really, if you're concerned that your roommate's going to leave the door open and not be there, put stuff easy to steal out of sight.
