Crime Near The FSU Campus

What's going on at near campus housing for FSU
students. Let me relate 3 incidents within the last
3 months just "off campus." The incidents concern
my step son a math ed major and my neighbors son
a business major. Both live a block off campus in
the Tennessee Street/Woodard (sp) area.

In the residence parking lot my step son's Ford
Ranger had its' back window broken thru and his
GPS stolen out of the console.

While in his bedroom at night his apartment living room
was broken into thru the living room window. Items
were stolen.

While walking home from campus my neighbors son
was mugged. He was struck in the head, knocked to
the ground, and his pockets turned inside out for
money.

Is crime out of control in Tallahassee? Are FSU students
living off campus being preyed upon?

The above is real, and not good.

Thoughts?

.02 David

Ive walked from stadium/tenn to the strip at 3am-5am felt safe. I didn’t feel safe walking jackson bluff at 4am on a sunday morning though. But I have noticed the emails that relate to crime around campus. I though don’t feel unsafe walking around by the school for example tennessee is a main road there are so many cars that I think you would be ok. Plus coming from the strip and bars you should be with people so it should not be that bad. But I have heard of break ins recently. Even some football players I know have gotten there homes and cars broken into

It ought to be halfway safe at Tennessee and Woodward on Sunday mornings–that’s where the Catholic Cathederal is located! It isn’t smart walking aound late at night on some of the side streets just off campus because of crime potential. Punks prey on students too often in these areas immediately off campus. The campus is pretty much wide open too, so it is smart to be careful around campus at night too even with the campus police patrolling and fellow students keeping helpful, watchful eyes on each other.

Unfortunately crime is out of control everywhere it seems in Florida and elsewhere. People get robbed, burglarized and mugged in some of the nicest Florida neighborhoods every day, and every night.

Ha, I live off of Jackson Bluff and I reguarly walk back to my place at late hours, haven’t had anything happen…yet.

Honestly, a lot of that sounds par for the course in any major/large city. Or really, anywhere. Theft happens everywhere.

It also sounds to me like your neighbor’s son was walking home alone. That is what people look for- easily targets.

Really, if you make yourself an easy target, you will eventually become one.

A lot of preventative measures are basic stuff, like not walking alone at night, not being distracted, etc.

Sadly, its become part of life in Tallahassee and it’s a damn shame. I was born and raised in NYC and feel safer walking around the streets at 3-4 in the morning then I do after 11 here in Tallahassee.

Tallahassee has a very large poor population. Those types of populations tend to be correlated with crime rates.

The best thing to do is be smart. Don’t walk on your own. Keep an eye on your surroundings even if in a group. Never let yourself be put in a bad place that could create a bad situation. I know a lot of my female friends tend to carry pepper spray and even personal tazers, keep yourself safe.

I would recommend that he doesn’t walk alone late at night and if he has to, he should be with a group friends, and hope for the best.

I have a client whose son went to FSU, and the client was very down on the school.

He thought the education was not that good.

He also said that during certain time periods like Spring Break, it is common for kids’ apartments to be broken into.

Even if only 50% of what he says is true, it should be a cause of concern for everyone applying to FSU, including my own son.

@floridadad55-

What specifics did your client cite? Granted my child is a freshman and has only been on campus for a couple of months but so far FSU has met all of our expectations.

FSUDad:

The client indicated that it was almost commonplace to have your apartment broken into, especially when kids are away on break.

And that many areas around Tallahassee are just plain horrible. Very very seedy.

I am sure if you stick close to campus, you are fine though.

@floridadad55

There are seedy areas near almost any urban university. I went to the University of Maryland a long time ago and some of the surrounding areas even then were far from ideal.

I was, however, more interested in your first two sentences.

If the area around parts of FSU make you nervous then also forget about schools like Yale. Schools that have been in the same place for a looong time can have poor areas near them, especially historic African American areas like Frenchtown, which is near Florida State. Frenchtown is substantially improved from the time I attended the university. Frankly, if black people make you nervous, FSU is not for you.

It is a fact of life that you must learn to use caution, especially late at night in certain areas. I lived for six years in and around FSU and never had an issue, nor personally knew anyone who did. Both my daughters recently attended FSU for undergrad work and one and her husband are now in grad school at the university. One lived entirely in the dorms and the other in the student ghettos near the school. Neither had an issue.

We still attend football games at FSU and walk everywhere, even late at night. I have personally exercised on campus many times before dawn and in many parts of Tallahassee without issue. I will do so again.

Use your head, manage your risk, and you will be fine. ;)

Maybe it’s just me, but I find it hilarious that someone was surprised that most break-ins would occur when students were gone from their apartments. Well no duh, that’s when it’s easiest to break-in and get away with it for days, or possibly weeks before being discovered. There’s also a lot less risk for bodily harm (or worse) if someone is in the apartment when you break in.

It does not surprise me one bit to hear that it’s commonplace for robberies of student apartments to take place when students are gone.

It’s not like it’s a secret when the university breaks are. They’re published on a public part of the school website, and are set very far in advance. Plus, they’re typically covered on the local news.

I’ve never seen a school in a major city like Tallahassee (in Florida anyway) where there weren’t any seedy areas nearby. About the only school in Florida that I can think of that isn’t located near a “seedy” area is the New College of Florida, and that’s probably pushing it since I am sure Sarasota has their seedy areas as well.

New College is near Newtown in Sarasota. Newtown is recently known for having two British tourists murdered randomly, when the tourists allegedly wandered into Newtown late at night (2~3 AM).

I don’t think floridadad55 likes “diversity” too much if I read his recent post about his hometown “The Villages” correctly. FSU and its “very, very seedy” areas might be too “diverse” for him.

Tallahassee might be too tame for floridadad55 too; “The Villages” is a “hotbed” of swinging seniors infested with stds.

If you are not like most others at “The Villages”, expect to be booted out of the town by dark suited goons.

Well, when crime happens to your family (x2 incidents in my OP)
or your neighbor’s son-- You take it personally. Invasive!

I will be attending this weekends FSU/NC State game and everywhere
(with the exception of on campus) I will be utilizing my State of
Florida “carry” permit. And, I don’t generally carry.

That is all.

.02 David

My wife and I spent this past Thursday night through Sunday morning visiting our student. We stayed downtown and walked nearly everywhere. We went to the football game, went shopping, ate at multiple restaurants around the city, etc.

We never had a negative experience or felt at risk at anytime whatsoever. We came away with an even greater admiration for the University and for the people of Tallahassee.

If you feel you need to ‘carry’ in Tallahassee for your safety, you might as well carry everywhere allowed in Florida because you can get your head skinned just as easily elsewhere in Florida as in Tallahassee.

Crimes do occur on and near college campuses; unfortunately, it’s a fact of life. Life is full of risks, you can get killed jaywalking Tallahassee’s Tennessee Av. too.

If Tallahassee makes you uncomfortable forget about any big city virtually anywhere. Tallahassee is very safe. I’d move back there in a NY second.

Well, back from the FSU game and what a fine game it was. The
Noles cleaned up. What a great University and fine Athletic Dept.
I really think J. Fisher is building a fine, winning program.

The Momo’s pizza joint is fabulous. Fun stuff!! 5 minutes from the kids place.

I remain troubled with crime on and about the FSU campus.
I spoke with an undergrad in one of my UCF courses about the
matter. She said she was in a bar and was “roughed up” just
off campus. I had indicated my concern prior to her regular
trip to Tallahassee for a game and to visit with friends. She
is now a believer that things are getting out of hand just off
campus.

IMO-- The Tallahassee police are not supressing the uptick in crime
around the campus. Again, the police are NOT supressing/dealing with
the uptick in crime close to campus. I’m waiting for the saaaaaaaad
incident. Then, hand wrining, hand wrining! Police crack down. Too
late.
