crime rate

I have heard that the Atlanta area has a high crime rate. Also, there has been recent shootings and robberies. How is the crime rate on campus and the surrounding neighborhoods? Should I be worried?

It’s not as bad as I thought it would be, but it’s still a campus situated nearby the 'hood. Just a mile or so southwest of campus is a complete ghetto. I would say I get an e-mail about once a month about a robbery near campus that involved a Tech student.

My son knows the boy that was shot Monday night. He did everything right - was in a group, refused to get in the car with his attackers - and still ended up in the hospital. The GSU student kidnapped and shot the night before did get in the car with the attackers, but ended up with only a minor gunshot wound. I guess you just never know. Being out very late at night does increase your risk, but I guess most college students won’t change their lifestyle that much to stay in at night.

Never go west on north ave, we did that one time just to see how bad it was and we got freaked out. People sitting on refrigerators on the corner yelling at us. Cops driving full speed up and down the street. Foot traffic everywhere. It’s a little scary to think about how close that ghetto is to GT. Never had any problems on campus but did have 2 bumps try to hit me up for money near the backside of the library.

thanks. can someone tell me what streets and places to avoid? What about downtown Atlanta?(I have never been there)

Avoid going further than wingnuts near the bridge that goes over the highway, lots of roamers and beggars past that… Avoid going near the homeless park near ferst drive right by the aerospace buildings. Avoid going further than north ave apts (to the west). Try to stay inside gatech campus boundaries and avoid going to dark places at night (stay inside if possible), especially alone. Pretty much it.

Pretty much the entire area is safe during the day. At night, the campus is safe, but off campus you want to stay north of North Avenue and east of Marietta Street. On the east side of campus, you don’t want to go further than Peachtree St, and on the north side of campus you want to watch out in homepark, but it’s not that bad.

Really, it’s south and west of campus that’s the problem, and even then really only after about 11 pm or so.

Any comment on crime issue along College of management (Tech Plaza) side?

I’m a Management major, so I’m at Tech Square all the time. As G.P.Burdell said, the entire campus is safe during the day, and Tech Square is no exception. At night, the area around the College of Management is still quite well lit and safe. The building is located right next to a few well-kept restaurants and businesses as well as a hotel. I’ve never felt uncomfortable walking out of an evening class.
