criminal justice college?

So im deciding between UC Davis and Northeastern, and I don't know which one I should go to. What attracted me to NEU was its college of criminal justice, but now it seems like it is gonna merge in with CCAS. Also I'm not sure much anymore of how strong their program is. UC Davis seems like the cheaper and more prestigious school, but I do want to leave California. Does anyone have any insight on the Criminal justice program at NEU? I searched on the forum, but nothing came up. Thanks!

Criminal justice is kind of what you make of it. It has a reputation as being the dumb jock major… and for the most part it’s not supposed to be really difficult. But there are also some pretty smart kids in the program, I have two good friends who are criminal justice majors who also are doing a minor or double major. Both have gotten really cool co-ops and will be applying to law school this year, so it seems like there are good opportunities there.

It probably will merge with CAS, which I don’t know much about, but it sounds like it shouldn’t have a huge effect on the strength of the program. Overall I think it’s decent if you have a good idea of what you want to do with a criminal justice degree and if you work hard to get good co-ops. But, UC-Davis is a cool place, and definitely has better name recognition in the West, I think it would probably come down to cost and which school you liked better.

Here is a ranking of the top CJ grad programs. I know with the merger the big thing that is going to come out of it is that Arts and Science is going to get split up. That way CJ is going to be put with other majors that it collaborates to do research with (Econ, African American Studies, Political Science, Urban Studies)

I have a friend in CJ, and they agree with what Emily said. There are plenty of “dumb jocks” and I’ve heard people joke about how easy CJ is. Yet my friend got a full scholarship and is completely brilliant-- so obviously not everyone is stupid. He told me that it is really good for jobs after school in law or public service or police. He said that the only negative thing the merge will do for CJ is it MIGHT change the distribution of scholarships. He doesn’t think it will be a big deal though.
