Criminal Justice majors please help!

I'm currently a community college student but the thought of transferring is overwhelming. I want to do something within either Criminology or Criminal Psychology. My goal is to make a career of being a profiler. I am currently majoring in Criminal Justice but I'm not sure what to do when I transfer. Should I continue majoring in Criminal Justice and minor in Psychology or Sociology? Is a double major the way to go? School suggestions are also appreciated. I am currently looking into Rutgers University. Thanks in advance!

My D is majoring in criminology at Penn State ( currently a Freshman). I don’t think she knows what she really wants to do with that major. I think you have a good plan by continuing to major in Crim with a minor in Psychology. You may want to set up an appt. with an advisor to get advice and suggestions about that too. Are you in state for Rutgers? If you are a NJ resident check out other state schools like Rowan Univ. Best way is to check out each colleges website for that major and try to visit if you can. Good luck!

I like your plan.

Psychology over Sociology is more appropriate. Psych is the study of human thinking. Sociology is the study of societal structure. Don’t mix the latter necessarily with group psychology.

Many schools offer what you are pursuing. Tour them all, and pick the one where you envision yourself getting involved and succeeding. It’ll be your 2nd home for awhile.

You need to review the school curriculum. If your goal is to become a profiler then you will need a strong background in behavioral science. You make want to look at post grad work in psychology. Also advanced study group behavior (Sociology) could lead to a career in analyzing criminal gang and terrorist groups.
