is it possible to get a job with a criminal record? i mean do all companies look make it a point to research the criminal history of their prospective employees?

Probably depends on what the crimes are and how long ago they were committed.

Is it possible? Yes. Will it make it harder? Very, very much so.

All large firms that I know of check, and even most of the smaller ones. They usually ask during the first interview then actually perform a background check later just before you start work (with a discrepancy between the two grounds to immediately rescinding an offer).

Yes, it will greatly hurt your chances at most companies. That’s why you need a designated driver.

In addition to a criminal background check, they’ll usually do a drug test (hair and/or urine), a credit check, and a check of your disciplinary file with the Dean of Students.

You will not be able to get a DOD security clearance with a criminal record…so any job that requires one would be off-limits.

My cousin’s friend in FL who recently graduated with a BS in MechEng (intelligent student 3.5+GPA) got a job regardless of his “criminal record”…

He had a few DUI/probation/non-violent crime thingies, don’t know the specifics, but he was in and out of jail a few times and was on probation for a loooooooooong time.

I have known two people with felony convictions and neither of them ever failed to disclose their convictions when applying for jobs. The HR department would pick up on it anyway. One of the men went into business for himself shortly after college. The other worked for a non for profit (with full disclosure) until he was laid off and had difficulty gaining employment elsewhere. He too went into business for himself and is doing very well.

Good luck to you!! It may also depend on the type of conviction you are speaking about. There are crimes that HR people are willing to overlook once they have a clear picture that this was a stupid mistake made by a very foolish young adult.
