Is studying criminology and criminal justice a good pre-law undergraduate major? I am looking at University of Maryland which has a strong Criminology program both graduate and undergraduate. Would I be better with a political science major at a lowe ranked school such as Indiana or Illinois, which I've already been accepted to?

Study what interests you and get the GPA you need. There is no specific prelaw major.......you will need the GPA and the ability to write your personal statement.

No, it's terrible. This is very possibly the worst thing you could major in, unless you could find a school with a "prelaw" major.

Go to Maryland or Illinois and major in a traditional liberal art, not in criminology. I don't think their difference in rank is enough to make a real difference when it comes to liberal arts. Take some criminology electives if you're really interested.

well to be honest I am really interested in criminology and was hoping to work for the government in ATF, DEA, FBI, or some other agency that interested me. I was then thinking of becoming a government lawyer and thought it might be a useful pre-law study program. Why would it be bad?

Go with what hazmat said......you'll be able to excel in a major that interests you. any major can prepare you for law school, and if you plan to work for one of the agencies you mentioned, criminology sounds like a good start.
