crisis !

I got invited to a dinner at a country club in Westfield, NJ for admitted students and their families. Invitation says local Georgetown Alumni will also be pleasant. Frankly, I have neer been to a country club before and I don't want to make a fool of myself by being over or under dressed for the ocassion. Making a good first impression is very important to me, especially because i feel like my family and I may be the only African-Americans (sadly). If someone could give me advice on what I should wear, it would be GREATLY appreciated because I am truly at a loss with this one.

This is the country club's dress code:

Ladies Dress Policy:
• Slacks, Bermuda shorts, capris, skirts or skorts longer than fingertips, sleeveless blouses of proper length, collared shirts, turtleneck or mock neck are the standard required dress on Club grounds. Sweaters and pullovers may be worn over appropriate underneath attire.
• They must be of appropriate size, length, neckline and fit.
* Note- Sleeveless dresses and sunback dresses are permitted in the Clubhouse facilities only.

Inappropriate Dress:
• Tube tops, tank tops, midriff attire, denim blouses or jackets, and T- shirts with or without printed advertisements
• Short shorts, cutoffs, mini skirts, denim jeans, cargo shorts or pants, warm up suits and bathing suits.
• Sneakers, men’s sandals, flip-flops, pool or beach footwear is not permitted in the Clubhouse or patio areas.

Donald Ross Room:
• Traditional golf/ casual attire are permitted at all times.

Fairway Room
• Traditional golf/ casual attire are permitted at all times.

Wine Grill
• Proper attire and jacket (tie optional) are required at all times.

Lobby Lounge
• Traditional golf/ casual attire are permitted every day of the week except for Saturday evenings after 6:00 p.m. when jackets are required.

Pool Dress Code:
• Proper Club attire as per the Echo Lake Country Club Dress Code is required when coming to and leaving the Pool Facilities. Bathing attire is only permitted within the Pool grounds. Pool and Beach footwear are permitted inside the pool grounds.

The "dinner reception" is from 4-6 pm on a Saturday, and the invitation does not specify which room it will be held in.

Please help !

present * lol not “pleasant”…even though I hope they will be. lol

Are you male or female?

those first dress code sections are focussed on the golfers (regarding shorts and tank tops etc). for a reception, a very safe outfit would be some nice black pants and a button down shirt…tucked in w/ belt. i’d definitely bring a jacket, and you can put it on if others are wearing them. country clubs are concervative - so nothing flashy, especially for a late afternoon thing. you want the kind of a outfit you may wear to an interview.

I’m a girl lol

I’d go with either the black pants/nice blouse and jacket or nice skirt/blouse with appropriate (read no 8 inch heels) shoes etc.

I’m sure they’ll all be very pleasant when you are present!!

I would wear a pair of khaki pants, a cute blouse, a blazer…and heels. =) Always heels!

Saturday in Westfield is suppsed to be a high of 55 - which can feel chilly. I would suggest that you wear something in which you feel comfortable. If you do wear slacks - dressier is better with a nice blouse and a pretty necklace and earrings. None of your jewelry should be flashy or very dangling. A skirt or dress is appropraite too as long as the lengths are not too short! Stay away from straps or strapless - something with cap sleeves at least. If you only have straps or strapless wear a jacket or sweater and keep it on - it is best for your first impression to be refined and understated. Also - stay away from low cut bodices. Shoes can be either high or low - whatever you are used to wearing. A closed pump or kitten heel is always classic. Do not wear hose with strappy sandals. Do not wear a lot of perfume, keep your make up and nail polish refined. Most importanlty - non of your clothing should be skin tight!. Right now you just want to get a lay of the land - later you can pull out the fun stuff! Some folks may be stuffy, some will be great - just remember you got into Georgetown!! Walk into the reception with your held high and a smile on your face you’re going to be awesome.

Best wishes and congratulations on your acceptance!
