On my SAT, I have a 640 on CR. I am planning to take it in October so I can get above a 700. I have practiced and used almost every resource available to me. I just want to know: for those that got above a 700, what do do you do when you take the critical reading section? like what process do you follow if any? I feel I am approaching this in a wrong way
I worked my way up from a 620 CR to final 760 in SAT CR. I recommend using some practice books such as Grubers Complete SAT Critical Reading Workbook, Barrons SAT Critical Reading Workbook, Barrons SAT 2400, and Princeton Review Power Vocab. Those are the books I used. It’s mostly important for you to understand the concepts and the material.
CR is where you need to take some things literally and analyze others. Don’t always assume things. I read the whole passage first once and then look at the questions. If I have to look back at the questions for say a specific quote or group of lines (12-27 or something), then I look back. Otherwise, I read the whole passage first. I definitely recommend the books I mentioned; they will really help you.
Thanks! I would read the passage as if it was a guided reading (citation question as I go thru). Is reading it as a whole better?
Yes reading it as a whole and working to comprehend it is better.
^^I agree. I got an 800 on my first attempt after realizing that the reason I would get so confused and mixed up on practice passages and questions was because I wasn’t taking the time to fully read and comprehend the passage–it is worth the extra time it takes to make absolutely sure you understand.
I got a 710 on my first CR, and I agree with the above posters! Also, whenever you choose an answer, always think, what in the passage supports this? I read that tip in some book and it really helped me, because the SAT loves to create answers that seem right , but aren’t actually supported by the given text. Also, underline and circle anything that seems pivotal! It helps you remember and saves time when you go back! Anyways, good luck!!
I will try that @JeanJacket123 ! thanks!
Something that was really helpful for me was realizing that sometimes the questions will send you in the wrong direction–as in, if you answer “death” for one of the questions and it’s the wrong answer, and you think that’s the idea of the poem, there are probably more questions with death-focused answers that they want you to choose. Don’t be tricked, because that just sends you down a rabbit hole of wrong answers! Good luck on your next attempt!
