"In this matter of the Diamond," he said, "the characters of innocent people have suffered from suspicion already- as you know. The memories of innocent people may suffer, hereafter for the WANT of a record of facts to which those who come after us can appeal. There can be no doubt that this strange family story of ours ought to be told. And I think, Betteredge the lawyer and I together have hit on the right way of telling it"

In line 25, "want" most nearly means
(a) poverty
(b) Desire
(c) Lack
(D) Fault
(E) requirement

Can someone help me rationalize the right and wrong answers?

I guess the answer is D i.e. fault
The author is saying that the stories (or facts ) of the family ought to be told, and he even says that they both have together hit on the right way of telling it .
And he says that if there’s something fault in the records, one can appeal…

Well, I just think so… ( correct me please, if I am wrong)
BTW , what is the correct answer?

I am guessing its c) Lack. Here I changed hereafter to in the future, want to lack and those who come after us to future generations:
