Critical REading Question!

Hi, I need some help with understanding some parts of the passage and with a question

Passage:
"Science proceeds in fits and starts. Scientists put forward results, both theoretical and experimental. The results are then debated by the community; sometimes they are discarded, sometimes they are modified, and sometimes they provide inspiration for new and more accurate ways of understanding the universe . In other words, science proceeds along a zigzag path toward what we hope will be ultimate truth, a path that began with humanity's earliest attempts to fathom the cosmos and whose end we cannot predict".

Question:

In line 32, "fits" most nearly means
(A) violent attacks
(B) unprovoked tantrums
(C) emotional reactions
(D) unexpected whims
(E) sudden bursts

The answer is E but I got D (I don't know why)
Can someone explain?
Thanks :D

So in the passage there are key words that describe progress in science as being an uneven and uncertain process. Of the answer choices only E really conveys that

Answers A-D represent a spoiled child or a emotionally unstable girl. None of which fit into the context of the passage.

Science ((proceeds))) in fits and starts

They know what science is doing and will do… it’s proceeding in fits and starts… so Unexpected Whims does not fit… as science’s actions are expected.
