Critical Reading

Hello Everyone. I am a rising Junior planning on taking the November 2011 SAT (and the one in June if necessary), and need tips to master (700+) on the Critical reading. I am currently enrolled in SAT prep, which has done wonders for me in math and writing, but fails to improve my critical reading. In the course, I take a different released collegeboard SAT test every day (4 weeks, 5 days a week) and go over the wrong answers afterwords. Its week two and I have succeeded in consistently getting 800's on the writing and math sections. Unfortunately, my CR usually falls between 600 and 680. In the writing section, I was able to improve by identifying the different types of questions and getting used to what each type of question is testing (i noticed a pattern in the questions and answers). I obviously have not been able to do the same with CR. I don't have much trouble with vocab, but struggle with the questions accompanying the longer passages. Any tips?

(Although it might seem too early to take the SAT for some of you, I would like to get the SAT out of the way by doing well on my first shot. My GPA isn't great so I really need a 2300-2400)

Just remember- ** every single question is DIRECTLY supported by the text.**
NEVER EVER put words in the author’s mouth. That is precisely what ETS is hoping you will do. If you can’t legitimately support the answer you picked, it’s wrong. Probably the most lethal strategy in all of the SAT is process of elimination paired with a cold, rational analysis of the answers left over.

Staying true to this principle got me from a ~770 CR to not only 800’s on CR, but perfect raw scores as well. CR is far and away the easiest section to 800 with moderate reading comprehension abilities, which you obviously have if you are in the mid-600’s.

Thanks for the tips. I’m taking another test tomorrow so I’ll tell you how it goes.
