Critical Studies Writing Sample Question

Hello, I am applying for the USC December 10th deadline and am gathering my application together. I'm applying for the Theatre school and the Cinema-Television Critical Studies department as well. My question is about the writing sample for the Critical Studies application. It states:

"4. Writing Sample

The writing sample should be a review or analysis of some aspect of film, television, or new media; a discussion or application of critical theory; or a published article."

Can anyone give my advice about what they are looking for in this? Also, does 'new media" mean I could technically analyise a videogame? I just wanted to ask so I can do my best.

Thanks and have a great day!

Most people critique a film or television show, but if you want to analyze a videogame you're welcome to -- after all, the videogame department is in the school of cinematicarts. But the mot important thing abou these essays is knowing about the story, so choose a video ame with good story so that you can talk about how certain techniques improve the story, etc.

Thank you very much for your reply.
