Critical Thinking/English Composition Requirement Question

Quick question:

My community college is so impacted right now that I may not get Engl 103 this semester. I did however get Phil 172: Critical Thinking/Writing, which counts for the IGETC but does not count for the Breadth Requirement for UC Berkeley and UCLA.

What should I do?

1) Just stick with Phil 172 this semester.

2) Wait until the spring to take Engl 103.

Anyone either take Phil 172 or wait until the Spring before transfer to take Engl 103 and get into these UC schools?

I’m assuming you want to be at the UC of your choice by Fall 2013, correct?

I think in this instance it would be best to take Phil 172 just to cover your bases for IGETC and then take that English course in the spring, but if you’re not going to transfer by 2013 then I wouldn’t waste your time or money and take English 103 in the Spring.

Its not totally necessary to get critical thinking class, you can take English literature and still count for igetc (but partial) but you would have to ask your school if they’ll allow this

Yeah the UCs will allow PHIL 172 if I’m fully IGETC certified. But IGETC is determined by the community college not the UC.

The admissions people I’ve talked to said they’d like to see Engl 103 done. They even went as far as to tell me to put in the comments section that I am registered for Engl 103 in the Spring (if I do get the class next semester, which I’m pretty sure I will). Apparently, it’s that important.

Did anyone actually get into UCB, UCLA, or UCSD while taking Critical Thinking (Engl 103) in the Spring before transfer?

Yes, I am aiming for Fall 2013 transfer.
