Critiques for Photography Arts Supplement (greatly appreciated!)

I'm not sure if I should submit a supplement containing my photography to colleges I'm applying to this fall. I feel very passionate about photography and have devoted a lot of time to it outside of school. Though my parents are well-off, they do not support my photography (I had to pay for camera myself-- there went $1000 of babysitting money -____-). I have not won any major awards individually (just a few local) but have submitted work to my HS arts magazine that won a Columbia silver crown award. I got a 4 on the AP.

I would really appreciate honest critiques of my work. Please let me know if I should or should not submit my work.

Just FYI, I am applying as a biochemistry or neurobio major, not an art major.

Hi reeny:

Can I ask which schools you’re applying to? And are you planning on majoring in visual arts/photography at a liberal arts school/university? This definitely determines the type of material you send.

In general, unless you are applying to an art school, I would say DO NOT submit a portfolio. Admissions officers have a lot of material to look over already, and unless a portfolio is expressly solicited they likely will not have the time or patience to go through something that doesn’t have to do with their school or programs. If you have a particular passion for photography it may be something to instead include in one of the essay portions of your application.

In the end it is a tough decision, but it is likely better to err on the side of caution and not send one–if the schools you’re interested in have a good reputation for fine art and they don’t feel like your work is on par with others in their programs, it might actually hurt you.
