Can anyone give some info on the Cronkite School move to downtown Phoenix? Where will students be housed? Can you direct admit to Cronkite as a freshman or is there a weedout system? Thanks for any info you can supply.

My S is looking at journalism and ASU is a possibility. Does anyone here with first hand knowledge of how good or otherwise of the Cronkite School. Thank you in advance.

I know that Cronkite is one of the top journalism programs in the country. Although ASU's website has lots of fluffy information, they tell a lot about the school's history and rankings and such.

I drove by the downtown campus the other day, and it is in a prime location. Right near Chase Field and America West Arena. There is a huge building for housing nearby, and also a lot of opportunities for off-campus living. There is plenty of parking even for the downtown Phoenix area.

Im not sure about the direct-admit, but Im sure that the program will have the same requirements as before just at a different location. The cool thing is, though, is that if you are unsure about the downtown campus, you can spend your freshman, and even sophomore year at the Tempe campus and finish your pre-req's. You may start the journalism classes a bit later, but you will still be on track to graduate in 4 years. My friend wants to have a major in the downtown campus, but instead took a similar major at tempe, and is spending his first two years there before going to phoenix. Who knows, you may end up choosing a different major along the way, and are glad that you stayed in tempe.

Thanks for the reply Christalena!

Yeah, like Christalena said the buildings are in the heart of the city. They bought out a large outdoor shopping mall that a governor financed about 15 years ago (which subsequently failed on every level) and converted it into their downtown campus. It seems like a pretty nice place, especially because there are windows everywhere, so it doesn't seem like you're boxed in.

And when I said America West Arena, I really meant US Airways...gah I get confused.

I miss when Chase Field was called Bank One Ballpark, or the BOB, too.

I do know they have a pretty good broadcast journalism school. So that's located in the downtown campus then??
