Cross-country at Haverford

Hi I was wondering whether anyone has insight into how hard it is to make the cross-country team at Haverford. I know that some schools only take 10 people and others take dozens more. Does anyone know where Haverford xc falls into this catagory? I did decently in high school (15:54 for 3 miles) but I am certainly not extraordinary. I would love to continue running with a team while I'm at college but fear that I am too mediocre. Any insight will be helpful.

i don;t think there are ne track kids that talk on this, so i'll talk to one of them and get back to you...

I'm interested in the xc team as well, and you definitely are more qualified than I am, my best time was 17:59 for 3.1 mile. I would say that you should be able to make it, even recruited... I'm not sure exactly how competitive it is

My son is a XC runner going to HC next year. He is pretty sure that anyone who wants to run on the team can, but you should contact Tom Donnelly, the coach to find out for sure. He is a very nice man who was quoted in the NY Times series on HC as saying that he "looks for nice kids who like to run."

Good luck!

MD Mom... Hi.

I'm fairly certain that all of the sports teams welcome walk-ons... to be non-inclusive goes against HC's values. You will definitely be able to run/practice with the team but some of the meets may be too small to allow all team members to participate.

but don't take my word... ask current students.

By the way, when you run on HC's campus, it may help your performance if you remember that the captain of GB "Chariots of Fire" Olympic team (yes, as in the movie) was an HC alum and ran on the same paths and admired the same vistas as you... he also won the Nobel Prize by founding the League of Nations... Lord Philip Baker.

Thanks a lot for your replys. I will definately contact the coach to see if anyone can be on the team. All I really want to do is be on the team and practice with them. I don't care too much about whether I'm able to participate at meets (though it would be nice).

Dante's Inferno: Hope to see you on the xc team at Haverford this year!

HC ALUM: Lord Philip Baker went to Haverford and founded the Leage of Nations? Cool. I didn't know that

I asked about XC when I visited, and was told very clearly that anyone willing to do the practices was welcome on the varsity team. However, your time, even if it isn't "excellent," is much better than decent and would probably get you on the team even if they did make cuts (especially if that time is from a rough cross country course and not a track). There are plenty of high schools that don't have anyone nearly that fast.

Wow this is great news! Thanks a lot for the info JP2249 .

"I'm not sure exactly how competitive it is"--> very

The 1st DIII student to clock under a 4 minute mile was Karl Paranya '97, ect.

HC Alum...you know so much about HC. I love it! Keep those interesting HC history tidbits coming!
