Cross country move. Shipping stuff vs u-haul vs buying new things.

.
When we moved our S from west coast to east, we didn’t want S out on road alone, so I drove with him. Heading east, once you get past the Rockies, it’s flat with lots of corn. The “great opportunity” will wear off after the first 50 miles or so in Nebraska.

As to driving, have a plan. Consider having your car serviced before you leave. We started at 5-6 am and drove to 5-6 pm everyday (often at 70-80 mph especially after the Rockies). Depending how far you get, it’ll take you 3-4 days. Remember you’ll lose an hour each day heading east (time zones). I aimed for stopping points to be in larger cities with well known chain hotels right near highway. I didn’t want to be arriving in nowheresville after sunset with my only option being the Bates motel. We had a AAA book. The hotel had to have a restaurant with a bar. After 11-12 hours a day in a car, a beer was a must. The restaurant was important as we had drank alcohol with dinner and driving back to our hotel in an unfamiliar city after having a beer was a poor idea, while walking to room allowed for a second round… We always filled up with gas every time we stopped for a break and immediately when we pulled off road for day. Carry bottled water with you.

Bringing your mom could be a great idea as you have a bank (aka credit cards), who loves you, sitting right next to you. Rooms, meals and gas add up.If you do not have your own credit cards, can your parents make you an authorized user on theirs. I would recommend two different cards if for some reason there’s a problem with one. When you arrive your mom may be willing to help you set up with food, small appliances, bedding, etc. You’d probably have to do the driving through Rockies with stick shift.

As to movers W checked out PODs, UHaul, national companies. The national company was by far cheapest going east and W hired them. All were same pricewise coming back. When S came back, we had him sell, give to friends, donate anything he couldn’t pack in car or easily ship via UPS/fedex. It was cheaper to buy new at IKEA. Good luck.

Well if my girlfriend doesn’t sell her mini, it’s actually a much better cross country car than my stickshift g35 coupe, so somebody could split driving with me. Both my mom and I drive pretty fast (80-90 on empty freeways) so would get across reasonably fast)

What’s the national company ?

What’s the national company ?

Interstate moving companies such as North American, United, Allied, etc; I don’t remember which one we used except the rate we got in early August going east was approx half the rate we got 4 years later from the same company for early June to move same stuff back to the west coast. I don’t know why the difference in rates from the same company, but it was enough of a difference to make Ikea the best option coming back.

Welllll… My parents just gave me a call and told me that they were going to gift me one of their SUVs. a 185k mile 2006 GX470, or a 105k mile 2009 Infiniti FX35. Either one of those could easily haul a ton of crap across the country, and they’re automatics so somebody could split the driving with me. My parents have a history of not following through, but wow if they do that would make my move quite a lot easier.

They’ve gone back on giving me options, which sort-of makes sense. I was surprised they were offering me the choice of 2 cars, one of which has 2x the blue book value as the other one. Looks like I’m going to be getting the gx470. It has a 6500 lb towing capacity so hypothetically I could even tow my sports car across the country along with most of my crap.

Hello!!
While moving from one place to another shipping is a major issue. To ship your belongings you can hire a moving company who will transport all your things safely. For moving a car to new city hiring an auto transport company is the best solution to avoid the damage to car and save time. There are many auto transport in Oakland like https://www.wewilltransportit.com who provide car shipping services at fair prices with pick up and drop facility also. My friend had recently shipped his car and he had chosen the Enclosed carrier transport to transport his car to California from Oakland.

Next time, might I suggest checking the date of the thread, this was posted 8 months ago, I already made the move about 6 months ago. I used Autozipper and had a phenomenal experience at a fair price.

@philbegas thank you for the follow up. The information will be helpful to someone else down the line.
