Cross country

My daughter is looking for colleges that have “no cut” cross country squads. She loves the sport, has run for three yes in HS, but to this point is not an elite runner. Just the joy of running…

Any suggestions.

Thank you very much.

Most squads can’t afford to carry extra runners.

You might look into club teams.

Since your daughter just wants to continue her running career at college i would recommend letting her academic selection be the #1 (and #2) reasons for choosing a school. While reviewing the options i would look into what club teams the school has to ensure it has Club Cross Country. Once she makes her final selection then she should contact the coach and speak with them about the possibilities of walking onto the team. If it so happens the team is competitive then she has a fall back option.

My S just completed his freshman year so we have spoken with many of the parents of his friends that have gone to schools all over the east coast and they have found the Club experience (a few different sports) for the kids was great, gave them the team feeling, competition and camaraderie.

Good Luck

Thank you for this detailed reply! Complex situation (more than you would think) because she is just plain happy and in good spirits when running track and x-cross country, yet nevertheless an average runner who would not be intercollegiate squad material. But I am trying to identify schools that do have no cut programs. Funny thing is her grades are not a concern!

I second the club route. Many schools have running clubs who train together and compete with other schools. They are usually open to anyone interested in running and may have different levels of competition within the club. I would have her come up with a list of schoos that are a fit academically and financially, and then check them for clubs. You might check out the website for the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association http://www.clubrunning.org/membership/members.php. They have a list of schools that are members and you could take a look at those schools to see if any are on her radar. There are other schools that have running clubs that may not be members of this group, so be sure to look specifically at each of her target schools, even if they are not in this group.

Excellent ideas! Thank you!!

I am not positive, but check out Williams.
