cross major

can i double major in Biology (weinberg) and Journalism (medill) even though they are in separate schools? I applied as a bio major, but say that I get in and go to NW will they let me do the double? If I am not allowed to do that, then can I still take a bunch of Medill classes since I am interested in journalism?

Thanks in advance

Journalism majors are not allowed to double major. Feel free to take Medill classes, though.

If you want to major in journalism, you need to be admitted to Medill directly. It's very difficult to transfer into Medill once you've been accepted to another school in Weinberg. However, if you are in Medill, it is possible to double-major in Weinberg.

damn it's too late now since I already submitted my app and put Weinberg as my choice.

That's not true dano- I know people who are Journalism and Poli Sci. However, I don't think Journalism and Bio is a good choice, because both are rigorous, intense programs with no overlap. If a Medill student double majors it's because they want it to relate to their Journalism- a political journalist would do Poli Sci, an international journalist would do Int'l Studies minor, etc.

And you can definitely transfer into Medill, don't worry! Just start talking to your advisor and advisors in Medill ASAP, even over the summer, and let them know you want to transfer. If you want Journalism to be any part of your education you MUST be enrolled in Medill, even if you're double majoring through Weinberg- so make sure it's something you really want.

Well can I still be a Medill premed or will fulfilling journo as well as premed program requirements be too difficult? I'm willing to drop my bio major if I can go into Medill AND fulfill premed.

Btw, thanks for all the info guys!

bumpin it.

Journalism combined with pre-med is probably near impossible, because you need to take the MCAT after your junior year, but Medill requires TM which is an internship that takes place your junior year (I think). So you wouldn't really have time to get all your premed classes in before TM in time to take the MCAT. Maybe if you place out of gen chem coming in to NU?
