Can you cross-register across the Claremont Colleges? If so, to what extent/how does it work?

Yes you can, and I think the schools have different policies. I’m pretty sure Pomona’s policy is that up to a third of your classes throughout the four years can be taken at the other four schools. If you major in something at another school, the classes in your major won’t be included in the third.

According to the website, “Beginning with your second semester until the end of your sophomore year, you can cross enroll in one class per term. After that, you can take up to two courses per term at the other colleges, subject principally to the restrictions of your major.”

One caveat that few applicants know about is that Pomona students are not allowed to major in a subject that is not offered as a major at Pomona. So for instance, you can’t be a Pomona student and major in Italian at Scripps (although I’m not sure if you can do a double major with one at Pomona and another at one of the other 5Cs). The same, however, does not apply to the other schools - it’s my understanding that Scripps students at least can major in something that’s not offered at Scripps. It’s best to look at the official catalog of each school for their cross enrollment policies, and those are available on their respective registrar’s websites.

Are you sure? That doesn’t make a lot of sense. So you’re saying Pomona allows you to major in something at another school if it is offered at Pomona, but not in something that is not offered at Pomona?

From Wikipedia:
Any student attending Pomona can enroll in up to half of his or her classes at the other four colleges and can major at any of the other four schools so long as the requested major is NOT offered at Pomona.

Here is what the Pomona website says about cross registration: [The Benefits of the Claremont Colleges Consortium - Pomona College](http://www.pomona.edu/academics/curriculum/consortium.aspx)

Note that there are no limits on cross-registration for math
This handy little rule is allowing me to take precisely none of my class at Pomona next semester.

Santeria: No, that’s not what I said. What I said essentially is that Pomona students can only major in subjects that are available as majors at Pomona.

I checked in the 2010-11 Course Catalog for the official policy, but didn’t find any explicit language on this issue, so I emailed the Registrar’s Office. Their response confirmed my belief:

I believe the registrar is referring to the list of majors on page 35 of the catalog (fifth page if the following PDF) under the section “Degree Requirements” (http://pomona.edu/administration/registrar/catalog/degree-requirements.pdf). For the entire Course Catalog, see [Pomona College Catalog - Pomona College](http://pomona.edu/administration/registrar/catalog/about-course-catalog.aspx).

Just want to point out that several departments are “intercollegiate” - that is, the faculty are spread throughout the five Claremont Colleges and the curriculum is administered jointly. Majors from these intercollegiate departments do not count as “off-campus majors,” so you can do them as a Pomona student. These include, but are not limited to, American Studies, Asian Studies and Media Studies.

Of course, this is all about what Pomona students can major in. You’re still free to take courses at the other 5Cs in accordance with the cross-enrollment policy, which I’ll post separately below.

Hope this clears things up!

The official policy on cross-enrollment from the 2010-11 Course Catalog, page 39 (second page of http://pomona.edu/administration/registrar/catalog/advising-enrollment.pdf):

Interestingly enough, that little note embedded in the cross-enrollment policy is explicit language on the policy on majors that I have been talking about. This note wasn’t there in the 2009-10 version of the catalog, which is maybe why the registrar pointed me to the other section.

Thanks for the info. I think thats silly, though. The whole point of Italian being at Scripps and not the other four schools is that those italian classes will be available to all 5Cs. I don’t see why you can’t major in it. If you jumped up and down and started complaining about it, would Pomona let you? (I have no interest in majoring in Italian, but it seems like a good example)

And how easy is it to petition for your own special major?
