Crossing the Border en Route to College

I went back as far as I could within the last year for this answer. My question is: do we have to show some sort of items list when going through customs when we arrive in Canada? I believe I've heard that a list with the approximate values of items we're bringing into Canada is advisable to present to the officers.

For those of you who have crossed, is this true?

Thank you for all your help!

We never did- just showed up with the car full and went in to get the student visa (you do need to have the CAQ and all the required info and the $$$).
If you are going to leave stuff in Quebec you need to know the values, but if you are brining items in as a student and plan to bring them home again there are no questions. Overall, we have found that US customs is MUCH more difficult and bureaucratic and mean-spirited, getting back into the US, than the Canadian border officials.

Gone are the days where showing your McGill ID was enough to let you pass without questions...

Thanks McGillDad!

I have all the papers, CAQ, etc... ready. I'll be entering through the airport office; I'm hoping it will go smoothly. The U.S. Customs Officers are a different breed of people all together. We'll have to mind our P's and Q's with them.

I believe you won't get nearly the same problems if you cross the border in a car - assuming you're not Arabic, and going from Canada to the US. I've made the trip before and I haven't had any issues whatsoever.

No issues here by both air and land travel. McGill Dad explained all accurately.
