Hello all -

I've unfortunately put off dealing with college apps until now. I had no real desire to go early decision anyway, due to the fact that I didn't feel strongly enough about one college in particular. A few of the schools I've been looking at include WashU, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt. Over the past few months, I have become a bit more sure about what my major with be, having taken an Intro. to Computer Science course at DePauw University (basically in my backyard).

I could use some help evaluating the computer science programs at the aforementioned schools - and could use some comparisons to the programs at schools like Rice and Carnegie Mellon. I really am not sure what kind of chance I'll have at any of the schools I've mentioned - my GPA is a 3.9, class rank 4th (out of 160), and old SAT I (taken a year and a half ago; I'm taking the new SAT for a second time in December) scores a combined 1370 (700 verbal, 670 math) - but I'd like to think I have a decent shot. If you have any information, including details about internships/co-ops, I'd love to hear about it - from graduates or from prospective students like myself.

Thanks in advance!

In order, I would rate their comp sci programs:
Northwestern
Washington U St Louis
Vanderbilt

They are probably not in the top 25 comp sci undergrad programs in the country, although Northwestern might be close, but they are no doubt among the second 25.

The following might be worth a look:
U Illinois Urbana Champaign (among the top 10)
U Michigan Ann Arbor
Indiana U Bloomington (in-state tuition?)
Iowa St
U Iowa

Thanks for the suggestions. Ideally though, I'd love to end up in a school with around 6,000 undergrads. I would also really love to be around a metropolitan area. I've grown up in a small, rural city, and would love to see what the big cities have to offer.

So - any more information or suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated...

Carnegie Mellon

University of Washington has a really good CS program because Microsoft adds a lot of resources and money to improve it. It's a little more undergraduates then you were looking for, but also really close to downtown like you wanted. I don't think you'd have any problem getting in and might even be able to get into their honors program.

Alright, so I suppose what I'd really love to know is what kind of program I can expect from WashU's engineering school. I've visited the campus - its fantastic, and I love the location and size. It'll still be a crap shoot for me to get in, but I'd love to have the opportunity...so, does anyone have any information as to the nature of WashU's computer science program - noteriety, internships, job opportunities? Thanks!
