That's a tough one. $40,000 over 4 years is a lot of money, but not enough to make the decision an obvious one.

Miami isn't as good as Michigan, but it is still a good school. If you are definite that you will get into Ross, which is never a given, then I'd defnitely say go for Michigan.

Your getting Michigan for $20,000/year, which is a reasonable bargain. But like I said, Miami is a decent university and you get to save $40,000 by going there. I guess it depends on how much value to attach to those $40,000. Is it worth going to a more highly regarded university or isn't it?

I got a $60,000 scholarship from Miami and not a penny from Michigan. I still chose Michigan in a heartbeat. I'm probably in a different situation because finances aren't really that much of a concern in my family but there's really no question as to which school is better.

Michigan's linguistics department is well regarded. It is not as strong as MIT's, Cal's or Penn's, but it is very well regarded. Michigan's Linguistics department has 20 faculty members, most of which got their terminal degrees from the likes of Cal, Cambridge (UK), Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, MIT, Michigan, Penn, UT-Austin and Yale.
