Cs 10

Well, they cancelled cs3s apparently. I'm thinking about doing a cs minor in addition to mcb major. is cs 10 good? i dropped chem3b and am taking that in the spring. I also replaced this with bio1al (luckily got into a lab, although it is at night from 630 to 930).

anyway, is cs10 a good intro course for cs61series? i have no programming experience either lol.

I’ve heard that it’s not, and that you don’t really program in the class… Judging from the description, it doesn’t seem to focus on preparing you for the 61 series:

Check out the lectures from last semester to make sure: [UC Berkeley Webcasts | Video and Podcasts:](<a href=“Webcast and Legacy Course Capture | Research, Teaching, and Learning”>Webcast and Legacy Course Capture | Research, Teaching, and Learning)

DON’T TAKE THE CLASS. It’s fun, but epic waste of time.

Just go straight to CS61a.

well i signed up for it during open hours. keeping it on there till i make a decision.

but seriously, it doesn’t help at all? i can’t take cs61a anyway since most labs are full i believe. what do you learn in cs61a anyway?

if i were to take it, my schedule would be this:

bio1a/1al
an r and c course
cs61a
and some easy classes that fulfill the 7 breadth stuff.

what do you think? i also don’t have ANY programming experience, but i want to get into comp science. khan academy has some tutorials on python and recursion, etc…is that what you learn in 61a?

you can take cs61a no matter how full the labs appear. people don’t show up / will drop

isn’t it hard to take 61a if you have absolutely NO programming experience tho?

You will definitely be at a disadvantage. However, I can’t really say as 61A is changing this fall

I heard they’re making it easier for newbies too. Don’t worry about it. Most people have minimal programming experience. :)

What you learn in CS 61A can be previewed here:

[CS61A Home Page](CS61A Home Page)

Note: textbooks and computer language interpreters are free on the web, for both the Scheme-using courses and the Python-using courses.

Wow really Starry? If that’s the case I feel really blessed :o! I’m going through the online text atm to introduce myself to Python so I hope I won’t be too behind once class starts…

PS- No programming exp here :(!

I didn’t have much programming experience either. And CS61A was fine for me  Takes some work in the beginning though. But by 3/4th week, everyone is on the same page.

Wow you must be proud of yourself :p! Will there be time in class where the professor will introduce the basic infos about programming? Or does he simply go straight through assuming everyone has taken CS 10 or has previous exp?

I am feeling much more comforting now :p!

Took CS10 this past spring semester. Really didn’t like it. It was such a disorganized class. That being said, I’m pretty sure most of my classmates did enjoy the class. I think I’m in the minority.

Also, there was very little actual programming instruction. The class fulfills no breadth requirement…no nothing. Felt like a waste of time.

The class made me decide that I wasn’t interested in computer science…teehee.

Keep in mind that a lot of what people might tell you might not be totally accurate, since 61a is changing this year. But if it’s anything like how it was when I took it, the first week or so is a VERY quick overview of the basics of the language. It goes by quickly because it’s expected that you’re familiar with the material. The next couple of weeks, up until the first midterm, is basic programming skills that would normally have been covered by CS3. Tons of people took the class without any prior experience and many had a bit of trouble and catching up to do during these 2-3 weeks, but its definitely doable. After the first midterm however, everyone will be on the same page and you’ll no longer be behind. :p
