Cs 61a

I can only describe the first midterm in one word: disaster.
I don't want to get the same score on my next exam so I am looking for some tips on how to master CS. Even though I watch the lectures and attend both labs and discussions, I am feeling overwhelmed by this class. I have trouble completing the homework assignments and projects.

I’m pretty sure about half of the class felt the same way as you. In fact, I felt pretty much the same last year after the first midterm too.

CS is not easy. It is hard. Really hard. Tip for mastering CS? PRACTICE. You mentioned you watch the lectures and attend lab and discussions… The problem is are you really understanding the content mentally, or are you just physically there? (Sorry I don’t mean to sound offensive or anything, I just want to know whether you truly understand the material).

Lastly, DeNero has that slide on Lecture 5 about how “You are not alone”. Do you go to Office Hours to get help? There are like 1531351547 TAs and Readers in that class, plus if you live in the dorm, there should be tons of people who have taken 61A before. Ask them for advice, clarification, etc. The Hilfinger mantra says “Don’t be clueless” and RTFM.

You can find a tons of other advice on r/berkeley (just search for 61a). Mine just reiterate some of the most common points (which you might find not helpful at all…)

Also, post this on Piazza… The TAs should at least be capable of advising you, more than a random guy on College Confidential.

Seriously, you are not alone!!

1) PLEASE PLEASE post this on Piazza for 61A. Students need to hear honesty from other students. You will likely find that midst all the competition and stress of 61A, your fellow students are like you and willing to help.
2) Please also talk to your TA or multiple TA’s. I know some of the TA’s may seem intimidating at times, but they’re all awesome. They love teaching and helping, and I promise they want you to succeed.

A low score is nothing to stress about. I didn’t do so well on my first 61A midterm either, but things have turned out fine.

If you want more specific advice, PM me. I’m often around Soda. (I might not respond immediately, but I’ll try to after my midterms this week.)
