CS at St. Olaf?

Can anyone comment on the Computer Science department at St. Olaf? They’ve got 6 faculty, which is a lot for a LAC CS department, so that’s encouraging, and, by all accounts the science and math facilities at St. Olaf are great. Still, it would be nice to get the impressions of someone with insider knowledge.

Thanks!

My S is going down there next Wednesday to sit in on a class taught by the head of the department. I would be happy to report back later next week on his impressions. They do have a very solid reputation.

That would be great, thanks!

You also might want to peruse the ratemyprof… website, and take a look at some comments on the CS faculty at St. Olaf. (Hope I don’t get in trouble for “mentioning” another website as a resource.)

Wife and S went down to St. Olaf today. S had lunch with a student, and then attended a fairly advanced CS class that was seminar based. My S had the sense that the Prof was a bit annoyed that he was sitting in on an advanced class, but S loved the format. Some of the material was beyond his current knowledge, but he took plenty of notes and thought it was very stimulating.

The CS classes are in the Regent building right next door to the larger Regent building which hosts the natural science classes. He thought it was a very nice facility.

Hope this helps!

It was really, really cold here, by the way…

Thanks for the report! Sounds pretty encouraging. And thanks for the heads up about that “other” site. I was loosely aware of it but had kind of forgotten about it. I’ve been finding it quite useful.
