Hello. I am a CS major transfer and was just wondering if anyone had any great pointers for someone who's going to be spending a lot of time in the Engineering buildings.

Are the professors easy-going and friendly upon approach?

Are there people who can help w/ programming woes as they arise (we all have those) even while not in a scheduled lab class?

Do the professors like to talk about their research projects?

I just want to have the most in-depth experience possible and to learn as much as I can for the time that I am there. I was thinking about the experiential learning (I believe that is what it is called) program and was wondering it would be a worthy effort.

Any tips or pointers would be much appreciated.

I am wondering the same thing, I haven’t found an outlet where I can chat with current EECS students. I will be transferring in the fall, I know that they have a great EECS program but it would help to get some more information on professors and the department as a whole from the students perspective
As I suspect, there will be good and bad professors.
Students who want to lend and hand and students who won’t.
At least you know one now :)

Try to get Computer Science I and Discrete Mathematics I during the same semester so you can take the Foundation Exam right after. If you don’t, you will forget too much material by the time the next foundation exam comes around. You have to actually know the material covered in Discrete I to pass the mathematics portion of the exam.

UCF has a bunch of Co-op work and has frequent events to promote getting a career such as career fairs where you get to mingle with some of the larger players in the area and give out your resumes (while getting free pizza). Get in the co-op/internship program if you want to do the whole “get a job” thing after graduating.

A select few notable professors:
[ul]
[li]Arup Guha - Awesome guy in person, great in mathematics, challenging classes.[/li][li]Mark Heinrich - Awesome professor, incredible amount of knowledge, real life experience and he’s one of the main people of the CS program.[/li][li]Fernando Gomez - Unique professor, makes the class more personal, he knows your name.[/li][li]Ali Orooji - Nothing too special about his teaching. Pretty much runs the programming team so get to know him if you’re interested in such a thing.[/li][li]Gary T. Leavens - Great professor who is really interested in the study of Computer Languages. He’s one of the biggest nerds out of all the CS professors.[/li][li]David Workman - Everyone in CS knows Workman and will tell you the same thing: AVOID[/li][/ul]
