CS Difficulty

Tech is known for having extremely difficult engineering courses. How difficult are CS (comp sci) courses in comparison to engineering courses (course load, material etc)?

This is for an admitted student who is currently taking AP Computer Science.

Doesnt matter

If you dont want to take a track because its “hard” then go to another school, or join a frat and major in business

If there any CS majors out there, please post!

Tell us about the work load, how much free time you have, quality of courses etc.

First year CS major, it’s not too much worse than engineering majors but then again I’m only a first year. CS 1331 is tough despite it being almost exactly like AP CS, but it should be as it is a major class.

Thanks, what can you say about your free time, time spent studying etc?

Pretty much the same as everyone else, expect to do 2-3 hours of homework a day.

I know of the classes I’ve taken, CS has been easier than ECE for me; however, a lot of that has to do with what your strengths are. CS assignments are often a lot more open-ended, and your grade is usually based on projects instead of tests, which I prefer. I know that the material covered in ECE 3040 is harder than anything I’ve come across in either major (semiconductors and microelectronics, the math is interesting to say the least). Basically, if you love CS, you’ll be fine  You’ll be competing against people who love it, so if it’s just a ‘hey, this major makes bank after college’, that won’t cut it.

2-3 hours a day???.. =l I do 5 at least, more on weekends.

I think you’ve got pre-college anxiety disorder! Stop worrying about how hard the CS classes are going to be. It’s the other requirements that are going to blow you out of the water! Just kidding. If you think you have an aptitude for computer science based upon your experience with AP Comp Sci then that’s a good start.
