CS + Econ Double Major?

I was just admitted into Berkeley for Computer Science (College of L&S). I am very interested in pursuing a second major in Economics.

How hard is it to do a double major like CS / Econ at Cal? Could I overlap classes? Is it overkill? Any personal experiences? Does Regents help a whole lot for double majoring at all? Thanks!

If you will be an L&S freshman, you enter as undeclared.

Double majoring should not be that hard. If you count requirements:

L&S CS = 14 courses
Economics (assuming high math version) = 14 courses
Overlap (Math 1A, 1B, 54, possibly Economics 101A if used as a technical elective in L&S CS) = -3 or -4 courses
AP calculus = 0 to -2 courses (possibly Math 1A, 1B; see http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html</a> )
AP economics = 0 to -1 courses (if you have 4 on both AP economics tests)
L&S R&C = 0 to 2 courses (depends on AP English score)
L&S 7-course breadth = 4 or 5 courses (major courses do count)

This means 25 to 32 courses. The normal course load is about 4 courses per semester, or 32 courses over 8 semesters. If you have no useful AP credit, you do need to plan very carefully to make sure that every course you take fulfills either a major or breadth requirement.

It should be perfectly doable, although you likely won’t have any space for non-major classes other than breadths. Just be sure to plan things out and start on the pre-reqs right away.

For what kind of jobs does a CS-Econ double major help?

If you are writing software in the finance industry, some economics and finance courses are likely helpful as supplements to a CS major. Some CS knowledge may be helpful in some types of economic research if you have to write a program to analyze your data.

But that does not necessarily require an entire second major.

What is the average GPA of the students who get into the Economics major?

The economics major’s criterion for admission is a 3.0 GPA in the prerequisite courses.

Does that mean that anyone with a GPA of 3.0 or more is admitted to the major?
