C's in freshman year

I am absolutely loving you man... although I don't have quite as many C's as you... you and I have comparable stats.... dear lord I hope I get in...

magnum is the new hero of the JHU forums....haha....

yes, an on-campus interview should help you. but if you also take the time to stop at Garland and talk to some admissions reps, that'd help you a great deal more!

A lot of people have told me to go and talk to an admissions rep. I would consider doing it since I don't live that far away from JHU (about 2 and a half hours), but what exactly does one talk about with an admissions rep?

I mean...I don't want to go there and sound like a retard by just saying "I really really really want to go to JHU (like thousands of other kids)..."

Has anyone ever talked to an admissions rep before?

Any suggestions?

I just wanted to respond to Spiked's recommendation to speak with the admissions reps at Hopkins and follow-up on aVenger's questions...

The adcoms at Hopkins are very busy -- each has an applicant case load of over a 1000 applications. They are there to answer specific questions you might have, but they do not have the time to meet with each applicant individually. Feel free to e-mail them if you have specific questions or can't locate the information on the website -- but a geneal "get to know" me conversation will not be that helpful.

With more than a 1000 applicants to work with, they are not going to be able to remember you. Spend the time writing those essays and putting together you application properly -- that is what will make the difference in the end. (I am pretty sure this is true of all highly selective schools.)

Good luck....

...and oh yeah -- the worst question to ask an adcoms..."What are my chances."

So are saying that I shouldn't do an on-campus interview, or are you just saying that I should not meet with an adcom unless I truly have a specific question...?

Does doing an on-campus interview show that I am truly passionate about going to JHU, or does it really not make a big difference?

My mom asked my student evaluator that question lax after my interview... I was soooooo embarrassed

Haha. If your mom asked, I think it's okay, cute...even.

Anyway, Lax does have a good point about it being difficult to meet an adcom.

But I don't think it's impossible to get an adcom to get to know you (through email, talking to them shortly while visiting campus, meeting them at a fair, seeing them accompanying an alumni at an interview, etc). If you are lucky, and they remember you...not to mention...remember favorable qualities about you...you can't say it wont be that helpful.

I honestly don't know what you would say to them, it's really up to you. You could possibly present yourself in a favorable light by asking good thoughtful questions about applying and in the process express a great amount of interest in Hopkins...or...you could be shooting yourself in the foot by asking the dumbest things ever.

This whole "meet/talk with an adcom" business I keep suggesting is part of a bigger picture: making yourself stand-out. This is something you could very well do in your essays like what Lax was probably hinting at by spending time on them, not to mention putting together a solid application!

I remember at the reception for accepted students, an adcom was there and she was talking with an accepted student and mentioned something particularly memorable about an applicant's resume.

I guess I'll just make sure to make my essays really good...but I'm still thinking about the on-campus interview...

Is it true that all of the on-campus interviews are done by JHU students?

I think they are all done by a student. That's how it was for me, at least.

Earlier on this board, someone was talking about how adcoms see through when students put done a major they aren't interested in. I put down biology, however, I have not taken a biology course since freshman year and I attended their social science Open House (I was out of town for their natural sciences Open House, but they don't know that), so do you think they'll think I don't know what I want, and will that negatively affect my application?

i dont think it should really be a problem as long as you express that you want to study it. maybe through the favorite class essay?

On-campus interviews are informational only - not evaluative. They do not affect your chances for admission.

And yes, in almost all cases on-campus interviews are conducted by upperclass students who are selected as admissions representatives.

"They do not affect your chances for admission.".....so it can't majorly help your chances if the interviewer wrote a stellar eval??

hmmmm....and speaking about adcoms - if you email an admissions rep twice (one week apart) about the same issue yet still receive no response, can I just assume they are very busy or is my email being ignored? (jw, cuz I had emailed the same admissions rep before and she had been very helpful - but that was back in aug/sept...) - i'm jus hoping I didn't annoy her or anything =/

patience is the key...the adcoms right now are quite busy at Hopkins. They have all been traveling throughout the country, with some of the counselors being away for more than 5 weeks. In addition, they are all involved with planning on-campus events and are just coming off two Open Houses, a number of overnight programs, etc. Finally, the adcoms can receive over 30 e-mails a day, and it may take a few weeks for responses.

You can always e-mail the general account (gotojhu@jhu.edu) or the student account (askastudent@jhu.edu) and may get a quicker response. And for the quickest response, call 410-516-8171.

xtina- if you're wondering about ms. amy brokl (cali and other states' rep), my most recent email to her (sent a couple of days ago) hasn't been answered yet, so i'm sure she's just super busy right now

alright, thanks everyone for the reassurance!! =)
...great, more waiting =P
