CS Majors: What was your first internship?

I'm entering the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor to major in CS. I don't have much prior knowledge of programming, but I have taken an intro to computer programming class in high school.

What should I do my freshman year to make myself valuable when applying for internships from top firms? I plan on joining a couple CS-related clubs to broaden my view of programming outside of class.

What was your first internship your freshman year? What did you do?

I was wondering, is it common for freshmen to get summer internships? Is it possible for freshmen to get part-time internships while taking their first CS class?

My (limited) observation is that CS students are successful getting internships after they finish their sophomore year. The ones that get internships after freshman year are mostly ones who use family connections to get something.

Pretty hard to get an interview in freshman year without connections. If you do manage to get an interview, you need to know data structures, so if you haven’t taken that, you probably won’t pass it anyway.
