CS, Math and Physics

We want to know what the quality of undergrad computer science, math, and physics is like at Duke. It turns out this is one of UMCP's major strengths.

Help please… No one ever replied to this poster – could any one out there give any advice on this now?

Anyone from Duke with info on this?

UMCP = Maryland, College Park? Duke is better in aggregate, I’d say.

Duke’s rankings are #20 in CS, #21 in math, and #29 in physics according to graduate rankings in USN&WR, but those aren’t all that matter of course. Duke always fares well in the undergrad Putnam Math Competition, being declared the best math team in North America in 1993, 1996, and 2000. Since 1990, only Harvard (18) and MIT (13) have more top 5 finishes than Duke (12) and Princeton (12). These four schools have 55 top 5 finishes, while all other universities in North America combined have just 40 top 5 finishes since 1990.

All three departments are strong, but small. If you want a more historical powerhouse or a more concentrated school mission/curriculum, you might find a better fit elsewhere. Duke’s most famous CS alumna? Probably Melinda Gates, heh. See post below for details regarding Duke physics:

Thanks Bluedog – that was Great Info!
