CS MS in UCLA vs CMU INI

Hi, I have been admitted by the CS Master in UCLA and CMU INI(information networking) and I find it quite difficult to decide where to go.

As for CMU, I believe that it holds an great reputation in CS and its quite difficult to join it. Yet, I am quite confused by why CMU INI seems to be so easy to join? Many of my friends get admitted by this program and some of them do not hold a very strong academic background(at least from my point of view). So I am wondering if the CMU INI program is just a money minting program?

for UCLA, it also seems to hold a great reputation in west coast and its location is good for job hunting. I am wondering how much difference there is between LA and Pittsburgh as for the job market?

Can anybody give me some suggestions and information about these two programs? Thank you for your help.

No one get any idea about these two colleges?

All the big tech companies (google, microsoft, facebook) come to CMU job fairs and recruit students. As far as the job market in Pittsburgh…I don’t think many stick around.

Well, as a person who was going to apply to CMU INI and then didn’t, the reason for INI’s higher admit rate is manifold. The reasons are:

A large number of programs. They have around three to four different degree programs. If a person gets rejected from, say, MSISTM, they offer him/her admission to MSIT IS if their profile merits it, and so on.

Expensive. INI’s degree is one of the most expensive I’ve ever seen. While they do shave off the cost of the last semester, usually, the tuition of around 65k for the entire program is the highest I’ve seen so far.

Between UCLA and CMU, I would have a hard time choosing. I think it comes down to if you want to do research or enter the industry. For research, I would pick UCLA. For jobs and industry, I would say both programs will give you similar opportunities.

Thanks for your reply~

Thanks~it really hard to choose between this two programs. The tuition in UCLA is also very expensive for the foreigners(about 30K per year).

You mentioned that UCLA is better for the research. Do you mean that it is easier to get an RA position in UCLA than in CMU?

Isn’t CMU more expensive?

I would hazard a “yes” at your question about UCLA having better RA chances.

@awvvu - Yes, it is. But it’s not like UCLA is much cheaper.

I think UCLA…higher requirement usually means better students…and competitive surrounding makes you better…

For me, an international student, UCLA is more expensive for the living expense in LA. The total tuition for these two college is same.(60K)

Yeah……I need to learn more about the RA opportunity in UCLA to make a decision~
