Well things are looking pretty grim on the homefront. Trying to make some helpful parental comments and suggestions. Rejected CS at UCDavis so probably will not get into SD, LA, Berkeley. No word from Cal Poly,SCU, U Washington also a bad sign. {sat 2100,gpa 3.8,>400 hrs volunteer, lacrosse,many clubs, international volunteer, spanish immersion,NHS,CSF, TA in JAVA class,AP CS sophomore year }

Has been accepted at Purdue, UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz, and Oregon State
How would you rank these?
Any insight appreciated.

Yes, UCSC has Silicon Valley proximity in its favor. Are you a California resident so that you get in-state tuition and decent financial aid there?

California resident. It is disappointing that there are some out of state residents and international that get in to the UC’s with lower stats when we pay taxes for so many years

Another vote for Santa Cruz. As an undergrad, there won’t be much difference between what your son would learn at UCSC vs. Berkeley, Davis, etc.

This is too soon to decide, you don’t have all your results yet–chill. I wouldn’t pay OOS money when you have UCSC available. I don’t like to ‘rank’ like that because I like to look at the bigger picture. Also don’t disregard your kid’s preference.

Unless your kid wants to leave California, I would choose UCSC. When it comes to Computer Science, there is no need to spend a ton of money.

About those “impacted majors”…

Find out if college juniors/seniors of other majors can take CS courses (if space is available). If so, take a B.A. in Math or Stats and use the electives to take CS courses…specially the software courses.

In the software engineering world…Math/CS major = CS major
