CS: RPI vs RIT

I've pretty much narrowed down my college search to RIT and RPI, and I'm primarily looking to major in computer science. Strong programs in math and other sciences would be a big plus. I've just visited both and don't have any significant preference based on the campus, location, etc.., and am really struggling in making a decision.

Of these two, would either one have a significantly stronger CS program? How about other academic fields? (Liberal arts would be nice, but are by no means a deal-breaker.) Are there any other major things I should know that I wouldn't have picked up from the info sessions, campus tours, looking around the buildings, and talking with the admissions department/professors?

Other question - Is Troy really as bad as everyone says? I didn’t get a chance to spend a huge amount of time in the actual city, but I’ve been reading some various comments on it and everyone seems to think that it’s mediocre at best, so if it’s that bad then that might also end up being part of my decision.

I personally hated Rochester and the RIT campus when I visited and would pick RPI over RIT in that sense.

Academically I think RPI is better all around. It is definitely ranked higher and probably more well known.

I didn’t spent much time in either of the cities, but I had no issues with the quality of either campus, so that wouldn’t be much of a factor in my decision.

The biggest thing that I’m worried about here is reading several reviews of RPI/Troy that mention high crime rates - I could deal with a bit of a run-down city, but wouldn’t want to spend too much time in a dangerous one. Is this something I need to worry about or just an exaggeration?

The RPI campus is fairly separate from Troy. The most time you’ll spend off campus in Troy is on Route 7 heading out of town.
