(CS) UNC Chapel Hill, UC San Diego, or UF?

I am a high school senior looking to pick a college. Each of these colleges have a 5 year combined BS/MS program for computer science, but I am having trouble deciding which college to attend. I am from Orlando, so UF would be in-state tuition for me. Out of the three, UNC is the highest ranked school overall, but I heard UC San Diego has very good computer science programs. I am yet to hear back from UC San Diego, but I am relatively confident that I will be accepted. Of the three, which would be the best choice for getting a BS and MS from??

What’s the price difference between UNC and UF?

Cost is always a factor so you have to look at whether you/your parents can afford it. That aside, I think you have to ask where do you want to live in college and beyond? Those are three good schools and I think you will be fine academically at any of them, although I don’t know their computer science reputations. I have lived in NC, FL, and CA. Gainesville, Chapel Hill, and San Diego are very distinct in culture and climate. Do you want to return to FL after college or work on the west coast? Networking will be strongest in the region of the school you attend for those three schools. Maybe you want to return to FL but it would be great to live in SD for four years (it would!)? Where do think you would be most comfortable on campus?

I would think along those lines rather than parsing which of the three schools is better academically.

Lets compare Tuition rates…

UNC (OOS) $33,916
UC-SD (OOS) $38,265 ($13,557 instate + $24,709 OOS supplemental)
UF (In-state) $6,313

If you can get past the additional $27 to $32K a year in tuition, then you may want to look at UC-SD (based on it’s location).

UCSD is a good school for CS, but I can’t see it being worth the extra cost over UNC, which is arguably just as good, plus the cost of living will be higher in SD.

UNC is the best school of those three. Assuming money is not an issue, get out of Florida and come to North Carolina. You’ll be glad you did.

I say UNC.
