I'm an intended CS minor and I'm trying to get into my first CS upper div class next semester. Getting into this class pretty much will determine if I can finish the minor by the time I graduate. My question is about the wait list. How come the wait lists for the upper div CS classes fill up so much more quickly than the regular spots? Is it that a lot of undeclared majors who will still be undeclared next semester try to add them? A lot of undeclared majors who will be declared by next semester try to add them? Or is it that a lot of non CS majors try to add the classes as well?

Unfortunately I'll have to wait until next semester to see if I'll actually get into the course, but the suspense and length of the wait list is killing me. The class I'm trying to add is CS188. As of right now, it looks like this:

I'm position 50 on the overall waitlist but I'm position 5 for the discussion section I added. The waitlist usually moves by the discussion sections anyways from what the counselors told me and from past experience.

For people who have experience adding CS upper div courses, considering I'm only a CS minor, do you think I will have a chance to get into the course?

There’s a limit to how many seats they fill in the beginning and then they place everyone else on the waitlist. That’s just how it is with almost all the other upper div cs classes. If you’re trying to get into 188, you’ll get in for sure. Abbeel isn’t the type to not try to accommodate overflow.

Thanks, thats reassuring to hear. Isn’t the space determined by the discussion spaces? So they would need more GSIs to accommodate more students wouldn’t they?

They would but it’s still early so if demand for the class far exceeds their initial estimate, they’ll either ask the GSIs to take up another discussion section or try to add more GSIs.

Based on this semester, it seems like CS classes are filling up faster than usual. As a senior who is also a CS minor, I can tell you that the school/CS department doesnt’ give a crap about minors. They won’t really try to help you get in to any classes, so it’s really tough to get into most of the popular classes regardless of your waitlist position. Your best bet is to talk to the scheduler… But fair warning, the guy is a huge a-hole.

As far as 188 goes, I’ve been told that it’s significantly easier to get in during spring, but since so many people got dropped from the course this semester (I dont’ think any non majors got in) there may be more people than usual… I’ve been told the chances of getting in are fairly good though.
