so my english teacher and i pretty much hate each other so i think i might end up with a high C or a low B for the semester. is that gonna be deadly for my college app?
i have near 100 in everything exept for english. English was never my forte, so i always have B's. Im going for top schools, so is one low B or high C going to kill my application?

For the semester or for the year? A C+ for the year is definitely a bad scene, but if its just for one semester it’s not that bad as long as it doesn’t damage your overall GPA too badly.

If you’re applying to Yale, probably. If you’re a normal human being, you’ll survive. I (through a lack of understanding between myself and a teacher and an innate lack of mathematical skill) ended a year with a 71 in Algebra Two Honors. Whoops. I was accepted to 6 out of 7 schools I applied to, almost all of which are at least more competitive than most.

It also helps if your major has nothing to do with English. For me, going into Communications, I didn’t need astronomically high math grades. If you’re going into Engineering or Biochemistry where an American Lit or other English class grade won’t be the end of the world, you should be fine. Just back that up with a higher than average CR/W on the SATs.

I’m sure you’ll survive and will get into a wonderful college.

just for one semester, i might have a C.
but it will balance to a low B for the year avg.
and yes i will major in something that has nothing to do with english, so i guess im good.
im applying to MIT, stanford, etc.
hope it doesn look too bad…

Caltech will probably not care at all about your poor english performance, so maybe apply there if you are worried. They admit that all they really care about is pure math and science passion in the admissions. MIT will care more than Caltech, and Stanford will probably care more than MIT. Remember, at Stanford they admit you to the entire school, so they wouldn’t want you to switch to english once you get in (But Stanford does forgive a couple outlying grades, which this C would probably be as you are a straight B english student). If I were you, I’d write some kick-a** essays or do well on the standardized tests to relieve some of the doubt about your english skills.

But yeah, you should be fine. If you don’t get into those few top schools (90%+ don’t), than it’s probably not your lack of english performance’s fault, as those schools are generally high-matches at best (unless you are a godlike student, which has been done). You should definitely get into at least a few of the lower-tier top schools, which are fantastic by all means.

I got a C+ final grade junior year, and I’m going to Cornell :)
