What are the differences between CS1110 and CS1112? I want to concentrate in programming, but I have no prior programming experience. Which should I take and why?

If you want to continue in CS, take 1110. 1112 is a fantastic class that will teach you the basics better than 1110, however once you are to the next level you will be expected to know all of the material covered in 1110 (1112 never covers as much material as 1110, which is why you know what is covered better).

My D, a CS major, took 1112 and has had no problems advancing through the curriculum. She had no prior programming experience and the in-depth, hands on approach of 1112 served her well.

Your daughter is one of the scarce few who did not feel hindered by taking 1112 then. I’m just sharing what students have told me repeatedly after taking 1112. FWIW I wish the entire intro sequence were like 1112, and then 2110 reflected the difference in curriculum, but of course the 21110 class is geared towards people who took 1110. I was a TA for both classes (1110 and 1112) and tutored multiple students who continued on to 2110 so that is just my experience. 1112 is (theoretically) no more hands on than 1110 (of course when students have time to program in class, that is different than 1110) - however, there is a LOT more help in 1112 (such as open book tests, half of the code written for you, multiple TA office hours and shorter homework assignments). However in 1110 and 2110 the class is bigger, it is still hands on through lab but the tests are not open book, all of the homeworks are huge projects, and you usually start with little to no code. So 1110 has the advantage that the teaching style is the same in 2110, while it is a HUGE culture shock to 1112ers if they continue. Again clearly 1112 teaches kids better, it is just what happens afterwards and what I have seen for the majority of students. Sure there are some kids from 1112 who continue on, even become TAs, but they are the exception as opposed to 1110/1111 where most of the majors and TAs come from if they have little programming experience (FYI 90% of CS majors take 2110 without taking a previous course, they have prior programming experience).

Evorlor, I think what you can take away from this is that students come in to the CS curriculum with varying levels of experience. Some are able to continue on successfully after taking 1112 and others struggle. It may be best to speak with both instructors to determine which course would be best for you. Are you planning on taking the course this fall or in the spring? Are you SEAS or College?

From my understanding both 1110 and 1120 are great courses. I took 1110 and found it pretty easy/enjoyable. I was scared out of my mind before I took it but Mark Sheriff is such a boss. Definitely one of the best intros at UVA hands down!

Does CS 1110 require a section class? I signed up for the lecture but have no section on my list. Is that a problem?

wait, hazelorb, is there a big difference between 1110 and 1111? I just realized I’m signed up for 1111

If you take CS 1110 you need to enroll in a lab section. These lab sections are the equivalent discussion and are graded on attendance/completion.

CS 1111 is the advanced Intro. CS class. It is meant for people who either have programming prior programming experience, but not Java, or people who got a 4 on the AP CS exam. It is faster paced, covers a little more material and does not have a mandatory lab section. They take the same tests as CS 1110 then though.

omg damn! I had no idea that was advanced and now the other class is all full and has a wait list :(. This is so messed up. On the schedule they gave us at orientation, it just says “introduction to programming.” It does not say advanced or anything in it. I’ve never dealt with a comp sci concept in my life and there’s no way I will survive in advanced. I just don’t know what to do about this scheduling at this point.

Get yourself out of 1111 pronto. can you wait a year to take it if you can’t get into 1110?
