CS61A and Data 8 in the same semester?

Any issues with that?

My kid was going to do the following for the first semester:
CS61A
MATH 1B
Greek Civilization (Philosophy breadth)
some R&C B class

But apparently most if not all the decent RCB classes aren’t available and/or he has no interest. There’s one that is ok but only has one opening left. So he was thinking of potentially doing a Data 8 class instead. Bad idea? Since he needs to go all out for that A for CS61A it didn’t seem like a great idea, but I don’t know much.

Thats what I’m thinking about doing. I’d rather take it now, than during sem 2 when I’m also taking EE courses.

MATH 1B requires a lot of dedication, but then again I hate calculus. Maybe your kid enjoys math?
As a transfer student I’ll be taking CS61A, CS70 (Discrete Mathematics and Probability Theory), MCELLBI C64 (Intro to Neuroscience) and Cog. Sci. 1 during my first semester at Cal. I believe I also need an A for CS61A and Cog. Sci. 1.

Math 1B theoretically should be a review for him, though who knows how much he retained. It’s been 12+ months since since he last took a hard match class ie AP Calc BC.

I also bring up my original post because he’s taking an English class at a CC this summer and he’s hating it. He’s actually a good writer but only if he’s motivated. The class fullfills his AC requirement plus it fulfills his A&L breadth. Anyhow I think he might go bananas if he had to take 2 predominantly writing classes again that he doesn’t have much interest in. He struggled mightily this past year with AP Lit and AP Psychology with the boredom.

There’s no problem with taking both Data 8 and 61A; however, Data 8 is a step below 61A in terms on coding and difficulty.
