I took CS61A in the spring 2009 and got a D so I am taking it over.
This will be my first time taking CS61BL and this will be my first time ever learning java.

Does this seem like too much...or..?

bump please

Don’t take them both together. Absolutely terrible idea IMO.

Furthermore, a B- in 61A is a prereq for 61B. I’ve never heard of that being enforced but they say that for a reason. The two together would probably be too much, in my opinion.

would cs61a and ee42/43 be better because I am trying to get as many prereqs out of the way…

I took both cs61A and ee42/43 last semester (Spring 2009), and one thing to note is that ee42/43 is pretty hard - material goes by very quickly, problems are generally difficult, etc…

but I would suggest that if you don’t have to take the optional lab section EE43 (like, say, you’re a computer science major in L&S), then don’t take it! It’s a lot of time/grief just to take a really hard lab section. Plus, here’s the kicker - the material in the lab section is not tested on in the course. So, if you have to take the lab section, best of luck - but if you don’t have to, then don’t!

I did notice that the L&S CS major doesn’t require you to take EE43, though it says on the website that they highly recommend it. I’m just curious, what other major would require you to take EE43? EE42 already seems to be a class geared towards L&S CS students in the first place, so I would think its related lab section would be full of L&S CS guys and not many people from other majors.

I took EE42/43 last semester, but it needs to be noted that last semester was an anomaly. The class was much much harder, thanks to the professor’s commitment to teaching (ahem…read: we got boned). It’s usually a piece of cake.

EE42/43 together is the same as EE100 which is a required class in CoE for all except EECS majors. You’ll find a lot of BioEs and MechEs in that class. It’s really not just geared towards L&S CS majors, although L&S CS majors tend to gain a lot from the course.

Oh, I see. I was under the impression that all engineers took EE40, but I was mistaken.
