CS61A waitlist

i am an incoming freshman and i am position 150 on the CS61A waitlist. what percentage typically drops from 61A. would i be likely to get in??

according to schedule.berkeley.edu:

Which major/college are you in?

Look at this page [Getting Into CS Classes | EECS at UC Berkeley](Getting Into Computer Science Classes - Google Docs) . Do a search of these forums, this question has been asked before, so you may find more information.

I’m in the same situation, and I’m feeling confused too. The page above should be helpful to you.

im in undeclared l&s, intended cs…

bumppppp…im so sad…and scared i wont get in. someone pls help?

CS 61AS (the self-paced version) seems to have plenty of space.

[What’s Going On with 61A?](http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~bh/61a.html) may help you decide if CS 61AS is a good choice for you.

would u pls comment about my probability of getting into 61A coz i dont like scheme coz its old and clunky and i like python better and i dont like self-pace courses coz we students pay a lot of money to go to college and have professor.

if i was going to do a self-paced course i would party all day so i need structure and interpretation of computer programming in a structured setting.

150? Unlikely, but it’s possible. I think like 100 people dropped my year.

oh thank u sir!! i certainly hope 100 people drop this year and they do some squeezing to fit me in!! coz i really need to take this class this semester coz hilfingers teaching it in the spring!

Did you phase i or ii cs 61a? If you phased ii this, why didn’t you select this phase i?

i phased ii 61a. for phase i, i did cs70 coz i saw it was filling up fast…i didnt expect 61a to get filled up too it had 400 seats!!!

You should always Phase 1 your CS classes… they fill up fast. Unless it’s something really unpopular (like 61B with Hilfinger) classes are usually full before Phase 2.

In terms of getting in, I’d say there’s a slim chance but it’s pretty unlikely. Worst case scenario, you could just take it with Hilfinger. If he really terrifies you, there’s always summer session.

lol i phased 1 61b with hilfinger was that silly??

Uh, what? You’re supposed to take 61A before 61B. Especially as a freshman, you really shouldn’t be doubling up, and going out of order could be a really bad idea. If you already know how to program and are familiar with basic data structures, 61B is doable, but you really should’ve gotten 61A first and put B off for a later semester… Also your story is no longer lining up… you phase 1’d 61B with Hilfinger but you’re terrified of taking 61A with him?

Either way, Phase 1 should be used for whatever you need most, or whatever will fill up the fastest. So, if CS is what you need most, you should get that.

i meant i wanted to take hilfingers class only once i dont wanna end up taking a class with him twice thats why… i only wanna take 61b with hilfinger cause i heard that altho hes rly hard , hes realy fair and u learn alot…

and i thought i could get into 61a thats why i signed up for 61b…im so sad i feel rly stupid now…

my friend from hs did cs61ab and 70 and he got no lower than a- in all of em… and i think im even beter…

i heard that u can increase chances of getting into a waitlisted class by choosing a discussion section with few people but i cant even choose discussion section for 61a im so sad…whats happening this is ruining my summer…

You can’t even handle putting 61a as a phase 1 class let alone handling those classes in one semester.

I just checked the schedule of classes and it shows 792/805 enrolled in lecture with 13 seats available … and every single discussion seat is OPEN! hahaha 61B looks normal, so I’m not sure what’s up. There are a lot of changes that happen the first week, so hang tight. My son was told that, in general, if you are in the top 10% you will usually get in. I can’t tell, but I’m guessing that if you’ve signed up for section 023/123 (Th 8-930P and Tu 5-630P) you have a good chance of getting in.

@blahblah9393 - now u’ve crossed the line…theres no correlation betwen telebears and my performance in cs classes… so dont treat me that way bro…i feel sorry that u have to put others down to make urself feel better on ur down days…

@mothergoldenbear i just checked my waitlist number and i went up 10 seats in a few days…but im still realy far away at position 140 :frowning: :frowning: …however…so IM SO EXCITED!!!

on schedule.berkeley.edu it says

so what happens if im on the waitlist and im not in any discussion section when school starts. how do i choose a discussion section to waitlist in…

Again, you really shouldn’t be doing A and B together. I mean, I did them together, but transfer schedules are always crazy. It’s a lot of work, especially Hilfinger’s 61B, and doubling up on CS classes is definitely not recommended.

As for telebears/CS correlation, well, you need logic and problem solving skills to succeed in CS. So uh, you seem to be off to a bad start. :stuck_out_tongue: Anyways, don’t compare yourselves to others, even your friends. It’ll destroy you here. There’s always someone who’s smarter than you, better than you, and trying to compete with that is unhealthy. How your friend did in classes (or how he says he did) is irrelevant. Also, keep in mind that if you’re L&S, you need to get good grades in the pre-reqs, at least a 3.0, or you can’t declare a CS major. If you overload yourself (especially with 3 pre-reqs in your schedule) it could do some serious damage to your plans.

In terms of the waitlist, there’s a reason it’s called a waitlist. You need to wait, that’s all you can do. 61A is handling sections in a weird way, so that can’t help you this semester. There’s also a chance they’ll expand the class, if there are enough students trying to get in.
