What type of course over the summer would put you in a position for CSE 11 rather than the CSE8a/b track?
What programming experience does your son have so far?
Very little experience. He’s only worked through a few chapters in a java book a couple of years ago. He’s a NMF, nearly 4.0UW, 1550 SAT, 11 APs incl calc BC, stats - all 5’s so far.
Waiting for my son to get home, cuz he is really the one who will be answering. In the meantime, I will tell you that taking 8A and 8B is not something that would hold one back much. My son did take CSE 11 because he had been programming for more than 10 years before he started at UCSD, but he has been going through the program usually taking only 3 or 3 1/2 classes per quarter. I think by the time he finishes he will only have had 2 quarters where he took 4 full classes. He got credit for 5 classes through AP’s even though he only took 3 AP’s. They are very generous with AP credit. You get 2 history courses for APUSH.
Okay. My son says that if your son takes an Intro to Java Programming class over the summer that should prepare him for CSE 11 because the course just uses Java. He says that he should sign up for an actual class and not try to just teach himself.
Thank you Bunny and son!
Is the UCSD AP credit chart for 2016-2017 accurate for incoming freshman? I can’t find one for the 2017-2018 year.
@JuicyMango Good question! If you email them to find out, let us know what they say.
