I'm a second year who recently switched into cog sci major, hci concentration, and I really want to minor in comp sci as well, so I want to take the intro to java class this coming fall. I'm currently taking intro to matlab (CSE 7) right now, and am doing very well in that class. programming doesn't come completely naturally to me, but I do pick up the concepts fairly quickly.

With this slight background in programming, would I be fine taking CSE 11 in the fall? does it involve considerably more work than 8A? I went into CSE 7 with no prior programming experience, so would I be fine going into CSE 11 with no java experience...?

I'm currently waitlisted for both 8A and 11 right now...

For what it’s worth, I took CSE 8A with absolutely no programming experience and I thought it was really straight forward. I never took CSE 8B or 11 though, but I wish I had just started with CSE 11. You might get better advice talking to someone who has taken CSE 11, but something, you could try is taking a look at the textbook for the class. It might be on reserve at the library, and you could just flip through it.

i did the exact thing.
switched into cogsci-hci, took cse7, found myself doing well and enjoying the coding even though i had no prior experience, decided on a cs minor.
i’d take cse11. i’ve sat through a bit of cse8b and i felt there weren’t any real differences.
it was kube’s 8b vs. ord’s 11.
i found kube’s tests to be quite simple (if you even just read the lecture slides).
i think attending ord’s lecture is necessary; he gives out each lecture and they are partially filled in, you fill in the rest from what he says. exams are straightforward too.

i didn’t think the weekly programming assignments were very different in level of difficulty.
so, i’d just take 11 unless youre really not confident in taking it.
but, you have the summer, you could always just peruse the java textbook (or a java tutorial website) then like when you take a dump (i.e. dont need to hardcore read it, but just read it to become familiar with it).
