So, I already took the equivalent of CSE 11 at my CCC... but I'm kinda nervous 'cause I keep hearing horror stories about CSE 12.

I got an A in CSE 11 and didn't think it was too difficult. We did your normal first semester programming stuff (the pre-reqs for the class at my CC were two other 'baby' CS classes - programming logic/design pseudocode stuff), but none of it was crazy.

You know, start out with algorithms to compute primes, move on to arrays, recursion, basic OOP concepts. We used the Deitel & Deitel book, Java: How to Program.

What do you guys think?

Should I retake CSE 11? Or go ahead to CSE 12?

CSE 12 is freaking easy compared to CSE 11 in my opinion. I had so much free time because 3/5 of the assignments are easy and are assigned once every 2 weeks. I finished one of them in a day and had the rest of the 2 weeks free of programming. I’m not sure how other people fare in the class because I learned Java back in high school though.

In CSE 11 I had many sleepless nights and got stuck often because the programming assignments are always so different but CSE 12 programming assignemnts are always about data structures and have the same format

Go ahead with CSE 12, you’ll be fine. I took my CSE 8A/8B series at a CCC and did fine.

I would still give you this same advice about a two year ago when CSE 12 had the same curriculum that it had for the previous 40+ quarters (which is where you heard all the horror stories from). Recently they changed the course load due to too many students being deterred from the program by it and the class is now significantly easier.
