CSE 3 or CSE 8A?

I planned on taking CSE 8A and based my entire plan for my freshman year off that. But after taking the CSE advisory exam, it says that I should start with CSE 3. It was even scaring me by saying that I will "struggle with CSE 8A" and that I will have "at least 12-15 hours of outside work every week". Sure, CSE 3 will be easier than CSE 8A, but that throws off the my plans. I am good at math, as I will be taking Math 20C in the fall. I am also coming into UCSD with 52 units. What do you guys thing? Man up and take CSE 8A, or chill out and take CSE 3? Thanks!

how the hell did you do so terribly on the exam that it suggests you take cse3? holy shiz, i’ve never heard this from anyone before.

cse3 is a joke class. its the MOST basic basic basic computer class. the teacher spoon feeds you everything, you don’t do anything besides do stupid labs copying the TA’s work.

man up and take 8a.

Brownman, if you were checking other people’s posts, you would know that a few people were talking about the possibility that the advisory exam had some flaws to it. Some people claimed to have scored perfect, or near perfect, on the exam but still got the cse 3 result. It’s probably not your fault. I for one have no experience in computer science and of course got recommended cse 3 xD. So you should probably choose cse 8.

I hope I survive that class even with no real computer science experience, it’s not like i’m taking cse 11 or anything ><".

PS: Brownman, why do I get the feeling that you’re gonna set the curves in some of your classes? haha

Like 101921 said, most people are experiencing an auto CSE3 advisory result. Haven’t heard anyone get otherwise yet.

No programming experience, definitely just take 8A. CSE3 is more like “I don’t know what computers are yet”. if you have the knowledge to login to an internet forum. You have enough knowledge for CSE 8A.

Just by telling my counselor I’ve had a little programming experience in a compiled language before (4-5 months in AP Computer Science), he automatically recommended me CSE11, so I can only assume it’s not THAT much harder

In short. CSE 8A can hardly be called manning up. It’s taking your shred of decency. Now CSE11. That’s manning up.

If I took AP Computer Science in HS (last year) and did well in the class do you suggest taking CSE11? (I might end up switching my major but for the meantime lol)

Thanks guys! So I should just go with CSE 8A, then. Hopefully it won;t be as difficult as people say it is.

@spacedog: Definitely. Heck, I only took half a year my junior year and I am, haha

I am in the a similar situation as Brownman I am a CE major and I got placed in CSE 3.
I have no computer programing experience at all. I am a transfer student with over 70 units. I have finished all the math classes 20A-20F and finished my physics sequences as well 2A-2D. I have taken CSE 20 Discrete math as well. What do you guys recommend I take cause apparently the advisory exam states that CSE 8A will take up to 10-15 hours a week and its a very difficult class.

I plan to take the following in the fall let me know if its doable
CSE 8A
CSE 21
ECE 35
PSYC 178

Thanks

Do not take CSE 3. It’s a joke class, and you will most likely end up learning nothing from it. If you’re a CS/CE major, take CSE 8A or CSE 11. If you have no programming experience whatsoever, choose 8A. It starts off teaching you the very basics.

@lahoward
It should be doable, but keep in mind ECE 35 is far more difficult than 8A. If you’re worried, take a less stressful class instead.

They recommended me to take CSE 3. What a joke…We are talking about 2 years of experience as a Server Administration here with good amount of Java knowledge lol But I think they also take the marks you marked on the check boxes into consideration before the test. For me, the only box I checked was “I don’t expect to have to work hard in a math course next term at UCSD”.

Anyway, you should definitely take 8A. I will see you there  I want to take CSE 11 but ERC MMW1 and 4 will kill me lol

^Won’t you be ruining the curve for everyone else in 8A, including me? xD

Is that a freshman course? I’m going to sixth so I think I need to take CSE 3 but I shouldn’t?
I barely know any C++ or Java, I only created my own Maple Story private server once but that’s cuz everything was done for me. Can I still do 8A?

Wait, do I need to take the exam? I only took the Chemistry and Writing.

wait nvm, it’s only for Warren huh?

The test is for all engineer majors and not mandatory, I think.

dont take cse3. its useless
