CE major incoming freshman
I have SOME experience programming. My freshman year in high school I took a vb.net class and got into it and learned stuff on my own, but there is still a lot of stuff i haven’t gotten into. Dabbled with PHP, javascript, but I never got into C++ or java or the mainstream languages. I feel like I’m too knowledgeable for CSE 8A, but not knowledgeable enough for CSE 11.
Also, there is a lower division requirement for CSE majors, one of the classes I can take for that is CSE 3, would this be a good choice to boost my GPA and can I take it even if I have taken CSE 8A/11?
Why waste your time on CSE 3? Maintain a good GPA is a good goal but padding it is kind of useless. There are some classes like seminar in CS that my kid took freshman year. Maybe you should try that.
My kid went straight to CS11 because people she knew who were a year ahead said it was doable without Too much CS background.
@DrGoogle Are you talking about CSE 91? I was looking into taking that but it wasn’t offered this fall quarter so I don’t know what else to take, would it be bad to take two programming classes?
Yes, that’s the class. If this is your first quarter don’t take too many classes. I think my kid only took 14 units, one math and one CS, the rest GE classes. I also think she did one research class, maybe one unit. The CS11 started out easy but later on there are more complex programming assignments, for beginners anyway. My kid only knew if and while loop but decided to take a gamble and took CS11. I think she ended up as top 4 highest score or maybe top 10 at the final. Is Ord one of the professors?
@DrGoogle Yeah Ord is the professor. I just read that CSE 8A is a lower division elective so I wouldn’t need to take CSE 3 at all. I just dont know what my 4th class should be now.
I have:
Math 20B
CSE 8A
MCWP 40 (writing)
Don’t know what to do for the fourth course.
The writing class is also hard. Are there any 2 unit classes? How about a GE class?
@DrGoogle I think I decided I’m going to take COGS 11 p/np
That seems like a good class.
