CSE 8B in the winter

CSE 8B will now require CSE 8A/L as a prereq.?

that's what the CSE site says CSE Undergraduate Courses - 2012-2013 | Computer Science and Engineering, University of California San Diego
there weren't any prereqs. before.

i was taking CSE 8B in the spring but had to drop for my other course that isn't offered often, do you think it would be possible for me to get the 8A prereq. waived so i could enroll in it?

Talk to the advisor. You might be able to get it waived.

If not, you might want to look into taking cse 11

i did look into taking cse 11.
but one page on the CSE site says i need to have passed the AP computer science exam (which i didn’t take).

is that not a prereq.? because if it isn’t then i’m all for taking cse 11.

also, just a side question, but can advisors see your transcript?

Rick Ord’s CSE 8B class is EXACTLY the same as his CSE 11. The programming assignments, quizzes/midterm/final, and concepts discussed are the same. It is the same course unless you are taking another professor

^ Yup if Ord is teaching 11, just take it. You do not need to have taken AP CS to enroll in CSE 11; just talk to the department about getting permission to enroll. They will let you once they see you’ve taken 8A.

^ what if i havent taken 8A?

If you taken some other CSE class you should probably be fine, I went to 8B after cog 16 or something, it was the cog class that was programming. I don’t think there is a solid must-do prequisite for 8B if so I wouldn’t have gotten in. But they’re just recommended, I also had a fear that I might not be qualified for the class, but once you get enrolled and things get rolling you’re totally fine.

last year there were no prerequisites, but during class the professor i had said he was in the process of getting the department to change that and require 8A.

and now when i look on the CSE website where they list 12-13 course listings, it says 8B in the winter will now require a FA12 8A enrollment. is that a hard-set thing or just something they are doing for WI13 8B so that new 8A students will be ensured to get enrolled?

perhaps i should just email the department, lol.
i guess i wanted to see if anyone else knew before bothering whoever manages the department email.

i hope i can enroll in 8B without 8A…

So after CSE 8A, do I have to choose between CSE 8B and CSE 11 ?

I prefer to take CSE 11 rather than CSE 8B. (profesor is better)

Am I ready for CSE 11 after CSE 8A?

^ if you see @bluecow’s post, s/he says Professor Ord’s 8B is the same as his 11
it seems he’s teaching it this winter too. so i suppose take cse 11?

idk, anyone else have any suggestions? if he’s teaching CSE11, should i just take CSE11 and not 8B if they are the same?

(also, it doesnt appear that there are any prereqs. for 8B this winter quarter, at least tritonlink doesnt list any)

You can take 8A/L + 8B(/L?) or just CSE 11

I’m just saying that Ord’s 8B class has the same content as his CSE 11 class

To: bluecow

This winter Ord will not teach CSE 8B.
I would like to take his class. You said that CSE 8B and CSE 11 are the same.
Can I take CSE 11 after CSE 8A/AL?

I spoke to my CSE 8A teacher :

to ohyeahlj: You cant take CSE 8B without CSE 8A

to me: I cant take CSE 11 if I finished CSE 8A

I have to wait list for CSE 8B now, latter only people from CSE 8A class would be consider for CSE 8B

The rules/ prereqs weren’t really strict last year but I don’t know about this year. I took cse 11 without getting a 4 on the apcs exam. Then my friend took cse 11 after 8a.

@seniorsfo
the CS site does say that. but tritonlink doesn’t list any holds/prereqs. for the course
